Remembering Guda Anjanna – The signature song of Telangana’s Dalit Revolution
Karthik Navayan, June 23, 2016 Round Table India

The first time I heard about Guda Anjanna (1 November 1955 – 21 June 2016), through my classmate and Anjanna’s nephew (brother’s son) Guda Rajendar, in 1989, when I was studying in 8th class. Anjanna belongs to Lingapur village of Dandepally Mandal in Adilabad District. At the time, I was studying in the Dandepally social welfare hostel, and Anjanna’s nephew Guda Rajendar was my classmate. Anjanna had two more well-educated brothers I knew at the time. Anjanna’s elder brother, Dr Guda Chandraiah (MBBS), was a Dalit leader and activist too. Later, after I left hostel, I heard that Dr Chandraiah died at an young age. Guda Shanthaiah, Guda Anjanna’s younger brother was also a poet and songwriter; he too died at a very young age. I saw all of the three brothers of Guda family in my student life. They were all inspiring people.

Behind beef politics at Osmania varsity, caste rift over Telangana
Express News Service, Hyderabad, Tue Apr 17 2012

Osmania University, the centre of Telangana movement, was on the boil on Monday after Sunday night’s clashes between students belonging to different castes over a ‘beef festival’ held on Sunday evening.

A second-year Arts student, T Rama Rao, was stabbed on Monday for making a reportedly inflammatory speech against the ‘beef festival’ organised by students of a particular caste who are pressing for beef to be included in the university’s hostel menu.

As the university did not take their views seriously, a section of students decided to organise a ‘beef festival’. Several food stalls were set up in the campus to cook and serve beef to those who attended. The festival was organised by different factions belonging to the Telangana Students Association, Progressive Democratic Student Union, Student Federation of India and students from English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU). EFLU hostel students had last year started a protest demanding beef be included in the hostel menu.
The opposition was led by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). On the face of it though organising the beef festival appears to be an act of defiance, it hints at a power struggle that’s going on among student wings in the university ever since the Telangana agitation started. Socially and economically backward sections have been accusing the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), Telangana Joint Action Committee, ABVP and National Students Union of India of excluding or sidelining the weaker sections from the Telangana movement. ‘Beef fest’ leads to tension on Eflu campus
TNN, May 2, 2011

HYDERABAD: Tension prevailed on English and Foreign Languages University (Eflu) campus on Sunday following the attack a day before on dalit students of the university by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists. On Saturday, about 15 dalit students were attacked by ABVP activists for planning to conduct a ‘Beef Festival’ on campus.

According to members of Dalit Adivasi Bahujan Minority Students’ Association (DABMSA) and Telangana Students’ Association (TSA) who jointly planned to conduct the festival from Saturday with the support of almost all student unions on campus, the ABVP activists barged into the campus kitchen and threw down the vessels in which the beef was cooked.
