Telangana: KCR to perform another Yagam, to ‘banish developmental hurdles’
Srinivasa Aro Apparasu, Hindustan Times, Hyderabad, July 14, 2016
Known for his staunch belief in ancient Hindu customs, Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is all set to appease Lord Vishnu in a big way. He is preparing for yet another major Vedic ceremony, this time to apparently ward off ‘evil forces causing hurdles’ in implementing government programmes.
Preparations are on for KCR performing the Sudarshana Yagam in his assembly constituency in Medak district next month. The detailed religious ritual will be held at Gajwel on August 7 to invoke Sudarshana, the mythological disc associated with Lord Vishnu in decimating evil forces.
The 62-year-old CM will perform the Yagam along with the family. Ahead of its start at Gajwel town, he will formally inaugurate the first phase of his government’s Mission Bhagiratha that aims to provide drinking water to every household, according to Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao, who is a nephew of KCR. Telangana: Poor women tricked into slavery in Gulf

Agents take money from employers promising cheap labour.
Hyderabad: When his wife called him from Saudi Arabia three days after landing there and started crying, Ali bin Yusuf Barkath thought she must be homesick.
The 40-year-old Parveen, who went to work as a maid in a Saudi national’s house, told Yusuf “It’s terrible. I cannot stay here anymore.”
After eight days when Yusuf talked to her, things were worse. “She told me that she was made to work from morning to midnight. They did not give her food on some days. She could not speak properly fearing her employer would snatch her phone,” said Yusuf, an autorickshaw driver.
The next conversation with Parveen shocked Yusuf. He became convinced that she was being pushed into bonded labour.
“When she protested, her employer told her that he bought her paying money to the visa agent. He told her that she cannot leave for two years as per the deal with the agent,” said Yusuf. (మరింత…)

What drives farmers to suicide? Telangana govt says lavish weddings, expensive education
ABP Live, Our special correspondents and agencies, Sunday, 29 November 2015
Hyderabad: Telangana has told Hyderabad High Court that expenses farmers run up to hold lavish weddings for their daughters and educate their children in expensive private schools were among the many reasons that drove them to suicide.
The state’s claim, which has triggered outrage among activists, came in an affidavit filed in response to petitions by farmers’ groups seeking a direction to the state to take steps to end such suicides.
The activists have termed the government response “fictional” and “irresponsible”. They claimed that attributing such reasons for the deaths of financially distressed farmers “belittled the contribution and sacrifices” of the farming community in general.
They said such a response was “ridiculous” and “misleading” given that over 231 of 443 rural mandals in Telangana had been declared drought-hit and the state had itself sought immediate aid of Rs 1,000 crore from the Centre. Mahbubnagar, Medak, Nizamabad and Rangareddy are among the worst affected districts. (మరింత…)

Challenges & Opportunities of Bangaru Telangana
– G Rajendra Kumar
The Hans India, November 27, 2015
The Socio Economic Outlook of Telangana reveals the numerous challenges, dynamic environment and enormous opportunities to make the Telangana state the icon of development given the leadership with foresight, fortitude and determination.
The way forward for reinventing Telangana rests on fully harnessing the natural and human resources, setting right the imbalances and incongruencies that crept into the mainstream development processes so far. This chapter is an effort to focus on such challenges, opportunities and unfold the strategies sector-wise as part of the roadmap ahead, taking into consideration the recommendations of various Task Forces setup by the Government.
Telangana State, despite achieving a reasonably impressive performance in the recent past in terms of various macro-economic indicators, still has certain weak links, especially in the performance of social indicators. Bridging of these gaps is necessary for building a robust framework of policies for improving human development indices. This calls for a convergent and cohesive action from different related corners and making best use of the competitive advantages such as the demographic dividend.

207 farmers allegedly committed suicide in Telangana in 4 months
Sreenivas Janyala, October 8, 2014 Indian Express
At least 207 farmers have committed suicide in Telangana in the last four months, according to Rythu Swarajya Vedika, an umbrella group of voluntary organisations working on farmers’ issues. The situation is grim in Warangal where 52 farmers allegedly committed suicide, followed by 35 in Medak, 31 in Adilabad, 28 in Nalgonda, 27 in Karimnagar and 18 in Mahbubnagar.
Inadequate rainfall, dry bore wells, depletion of ground water and scarce irrigation facilities leading to general crop failure have been cited as the reasons that forced these farmers to end their lives.
“A majority of the victims are tenant farmers who pay very high rates to take land on lease, often paying up to Rs 10,000 per acre per season. When their crops fail, they are left in debt. With private financiers hounding them, they take their own lives,’’ said RTI activist B Kondala Reddy who is associated with Rythu Swarajya Vedika, and Caring Citizens Collective, an NGO. The Agriculture Department officials said cotton and chilli farmers have been hit hard, because of unseasonal showers and lack of sufficient rainfall.

Minority and BC votes, T-JAC key factors
S. Venugopal, The Hindu, Mahabubnagar, March 11, 2012
The presence of 42,000 Muslim voters and the role that the Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) will play will be the crucial factors in deciding the fate of candidates in the by-elections to Mahabubnagar Assembly constituency.
The elections will see a four-cornered contest between S. Prakash (Congress), P. Chandrasekhar (TDP), Syed Ibrahim (TRS) and Y. Srinivas Reddy (BJP) although there are nine other candidates in the fray.
The results may throw up a tight finish as all the four main parties have pulled out all stops to woo the 1.86 lakh voters in this predominantly urban constituency, which has the highest literacy rate in the district. This is the second by-election in Mahabubnagar constituency, after 1980 when Congress (I) MLA K. Ram Reddy passed away.
In the 2009 elections, N. Rajeswar Reddy, who contested as an Independent, defeated his nearest TRS rival Syed Ibrahim by a margin of 5,137 votes. He was in the Praja Rajyam and was hopeful of securing ticket, but contested as an Independent on being denied the nomination.
