Going back in time through timeless snaps
J.S.Ifthekhar, The Hindu, Hyderabad, June 17, 2013
‘Aks-e-Hyderabad’, a photo album with 600-odd stunning images narrates the tale of twin cities in a telling manner
Life brings tears, smiles and memories. Tears dry, smiles fade but memories last forever. All it takes is one picture to bring back a thousand memories. The Hyderabad of yore where time stood still, where the dust of the royal past never settles. How about reliving an age gone by?
Now, you can take a step back in time and enjoy a fascinating past. Aks-e-Hyderabad (Images of Hyderabad), a photo album brought out by Urdu daily Siasat , brings alive the past in minute detail. A picture is worth a thousand words. The album, with 600-odd stunning images, narrate the tale of twin cities in a telling manner.
Though there is no dearth of books on Hyderabad, an album is perhaps the first of its kind. Flip through the folder, and you get the feeling of a kind of videotape playing in your mind.
Striking images of Golconda, the Pearl City, the agony of the 1908 floods, modes of transportation, coins and currency, culture and civilisation, marriage, music and dance, jewellery and costume and the Nizams and their family flash by. Just about everything of the erstwhile Hyderabad is contained in 319 pages of the photo album.
The album covers the period from 1880 to 1960. “We have 1,300 rare photographs in our collection. About 650 have been included in this album. The rest we plan to publish shortly,” says Zahid Ali Khan, editor, Siasat . The credit for collecting and compiling the photographs goes to noted writer Allama Aijaz Farruq. (మరింత…)

Glimpses of darkroom magic
Monday March 24 2008

NOT long ago, photographers toiled in the dark rooms developing and printing. The darkroom chemistry – silver halide, bromide, metol, hypo all gave them a high and many considered it an art to get the right combination of chemicals. And nothing matched the happiness of getting the shadows and highlights right.Rajan Babu, a native of Koratla village in Karimnagar district, belongs to that genre of photographers who created magic in the dark rooms. Rajan, who took to serious photography in 1960 after joining the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University here, is now an accomplished pictorial, fashion and glamour, industrial and advertising photographer.
Rajan, as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of his photographic journey, is now showing a few of his works at the ICCR Art Gallery on Ravindra Bharati premises. The show will be on till March 24.‘‘Excellent pictures do not happen accidentally. There should be control on the lighting and subject,’’ says Rajan who has Andhra Pradesh Dairy Development Corporation and the National Mineral Development Corporation among his clientele. (మరింత…)

Buffaloes’ day out
‘Sadar’ celebrated with fervour by Yadav community

Hyderabad: It was a celebration of a different kind. When the Yadav community gets together at ‘Sadar’, it’s all about harmony and exhibiting the male buffalo, a symbol of their existence.
A traditional post-Diwali celebrations, ‘Sadar’ by the Yadavs across the twin cities on Saturday evening was no less than a colourful carnival. The scene came alive as buffaloes decorated beautifully with garlands, paints and designs strutted around with their owners. Most of the buffaloes were forced to stand on their hind legs as a symbol of exhibitionism that doubled up as a signature move while people around them looked awestruck as the beasts performed the stunt. With the ‘teen maar’ beat in the background, people danced around the buffaloes while they were being paraded.
“According to the ritual, members of the community exhibit the strongest and finest male buffalo that is selected by the head of the family and is taken out for everyone to see. All the buffaloes are displayed to the head of the community and the best one brings home a prize, honour and respect for the family”, said P. Suresh Kumar Yadav, a participant from Kacheguda.
