3 Congress MPs join TRS over separate Telangana state
CR Sukumar, ET Bureau, The Economic Times, May 31, 2103

Hyderabad: Three senior Congress leaders from Andhra Pradesh have announced plans to quit and join the rival Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) agitating for a separate Telangana state, dealing a blow to the party’s prospects in one of its strongholds and chipping away at its strength at the Centre.

The three leaders-an invitee to the Congress Working Committee Keshav Rao and two Lok Sabha MPs M Jagannatham and Gaddam Vivekanand-are expected to formally join TRS at a rally in Hyderabad on June 2.

The decision of the two Lok Sabha MPs will further deplete the ranks of the minority Congress in the Lok Sabha and once again put the statehood issue, which it has trying to sweep under the carpet, on the centre stage. (మరింత…)

Telangana issue always led by politics
Ch. V.M. Krishna Rao, Deccan Chronicle, 31 May 2103

Hyderabad: Though the issue of granting separate statehood to the Telangana region has been on the cards for over five decades, successive Union governments have ignored it. Almost all parties, except CPM, have declared their sympathy and respect for the sentiments of separate statehood, but none has done more than pay lip service to the cause.

Before the formation of AP State in 1956, though the demand for a separate Telangana was recommended by the First States Reorganisation Commission headed by Fazal Ali, it was ignored and the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru ultimately decided on the creation of Andhra Pradesh based on the linguistic states formula. The Gentleman’s Agreement entered into had agreed to address regional issues, only to ignore them later.

There was no movement for Telangana state from 1956 to 1969. It was during Kasu Brahmananda Reddy’s regime that the movement took a violent turn. Scores of T-supporters were gunned down in police firings. Dr Marri Chenna Reddy started the Telangana Praja Samiti and bagged 10 LS seats. Several stalwarts in Congress lost the elections in the 1971. (మరింత…)

Telangana student leaders to jump into poll fray
Nikhila Henry, TNN, May 29, 2013

Hyderabad: The Telangana movement is all set to get a shot in the arm with scores of student leaders planning to step up their struggle after being promised tickets to contest the 2014 Assembly polls by various parties including the TRS, TDP and the BJP.

The student leaders, who had been criticising political parties for taking them for a ride by promising them their due, seem to have buried the hatchet and are eager to take their struggle for statehood outside the university spheres. They came out in open support of their leaders, saying the move was the logical next step and are now setting up offices and rooting to reach out to their voters in the 10 Telangana districts.

“We have been boosting the protests from within the four walls of the university, but it’s time to take up a bigger political struggle,” said Pidamarthi Ravi, a prominent pro-Telangana student leader from Osmania University, which has traditionally been a hotbed for the statehood movement. Ravi is expected to contest on a TRS ticket from Madira in Khammam. (మరింత…)

Party adopts resolution on Telangana at the concluding session of Mahanadu, leaders fire salvos at rival parties

The Telugu Desam Party has reiterated its stand favouring a separate Telangana, asserting that it is up to the Centre to take a decision.

Adopting the all-important political resolution as the two-day Mahanadu came to an end on Tuesday, the party pointed out that the polit bureau had taken this decision in October 2008 and followed it up with a letter to the committee headed by then Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

The TDP also wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to convene an all-party meeting and this was conceded by the Centre in December last year. In line with the letter to Mr. Mukherjee’s panel, another letter was handed over at the all-party meeting. The party was committed to both letters. (మరింత…)

May 24, 2013, The Hans India

Thanks to TRS, new dynasty rises in Telangana
J R Prasad, New Indian Express, 5 May 2013

Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) chief K Chandrasekhar Rao’s dream of carving out a Telangana state still eludes him, so he is busy putting together the political dreams of the next generation in his family. TRS appears to be the latest entrant in the long list of political leaders bitten by the dynasty bug.

Chandrasekhar Rao’s son K Taraka Rama Rao and nephew T Harish Rao play a key role in deciding the day-to-day affairs of the party. Rama Rao represents Siricilla segment in the Assembly whereas Harish Rao is the MLA from Siddipet.

With his son and nephew at the helm of affairs, Chandrasekhar Rao has cleared the decks for his daughter K Kavitha, who has been playing a key role in the Telangana movement by taking up non-political issues concerning the region with her outfit Telangana Jagruthi, to take the political plunge. Support Telangana State Demand

Leader and activists of all parties advocating a separate State of Telangana held a two-day dharna at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on April 29 and 30, 2013 during the Parliament session to reiterate their demand for a Telangana State. The following document was distributed at the dharna. It is a statement from the Telangana Joint Action Committee. It is being reproduced here for the benefit of our readers.

The Telangana people are struggling for a separate State for this region for about the 57 years to get their judicious share of political power and resources for economic growth and prosperity. Today, the entire Telangana population, regardless of their political, social and economic differences, would like to live with self-respect and prosper in their own State. The demand is accepted as judicious by all the political parties of the State. In the 2009 elections, except the CPM, all other political parties—the TDP, CPI and Congress—assured a separate State to the people of the region. However, the promise has not been fulfilled.

The situation changed after the massive upsurge of people during the indefinite fast by Sri K. Chandrasekhar Rao in 2009. Considering the ground realities and political situation, the Government of India, which has the responsibility to uphold the Constitution and respect the aspirations of the people, has taken a clear decision to establish the Telangana State. The announcement for initiating the process of establishing a Telangana State was made by the then Hon’ble Union Home Minister, P. Chidambaram, on December 9 and was reiterated on the floor of Parliament, the highest decision-making body empowered to take such decisions. (మరింత…)
