The University was first set up in 1917, under the rule of Nizam Osman Ali Khan.
Nitin B., The NEWS Minute, April 25, 2017
The year was 1917, and Sir Akbar Hydari, who was then the Home Secretary to the Hyderabad State Government under Nizam Osman Ali Khan, submitted a memorandum to the then Education Minister of the state.
The memorandum emphasised the need to establish a University in Hyderabad, with ‘Urdu’ as the medium of instruction “as it is the language of the widest currency in India, official language of the State, and it is a language which is understood by a vast majority of the population of the State.”
The memorandum had come at a time when several people, especially intellectuals, were thinking about ways to cater to the interest for higher education, which had grown in the state.
Taking the memorandum into consideration, the Nizam issued a ‘firman’, or order, on April 26, 1917, to establish a university in Hyderabad.
A 100 years later, the Osmania University in Hyderabad is all set to host its centenary celebrations.

Hyderabad- El Dorado for Andhraites : Parsa Venkateshwar Rao Jr అక్టోబర్ 29, 2013Posted by M Bharath Bhushan in Andhra, Andhrapreneurship, Culture, Godavari, Hyderabad, Nalgonda, Telangana, universities.

Why everyone wants a slice of the Hyderabad pie
Parsa Venkateshwar Rao Jr, DNA, October 29,2013
The meeting was fortuitous but rewarding. An Andhra businessman wanting to be a politician from East Godavari district – the heart of coastal Andhra – was waiting to meet a senior Congress functionary-cum-minister talked candidly about what Hyderabad means to Andhraites. He cannot be named because his lobbying for a ticket in the forthcoming elections would be torpedoed if he is identified.
He runs a college in Rajahmundry, headquarters of East Godavari district. Rajahmundry is a celebrated place in Andhra history, also known as Rajamahendravaram of yore. And he also runs a college in Nalgonda. It is an example of the entrepreneurial panache of the Andhraites. He has done his Bachelor’s of Commerce (B Com) and law at Andhra University. He has also done a course from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), New Delhi.

Andhra Pradesh bifurcation unlikely to hit higher education sector
N Madhav, Business Standard, Hyderabad, October 18, 2013
Of the 42 varsities in the state, 34 are state universities, three central, five deemed
The bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh into Telangana and Seemandhra is unlikely to have an impact on the education sectors of both the regions.
Of the 42 universities in the state, 34 are state universities, three central and five deemed. Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema have 10 state universities each, while Telangana has 14. Besides, there are 700 private engineering colleges spread across the state.
While the admission to state universities and private engineering colleges is in the proportion of 85:15 for local (region-wise) and non-local students, half the seats in central universities are for state candidates. Private deemed universities have the autonomy to frame their own rules.
“With the existing local and non-local system in place for state universities and private engineering colleges, there is no reason for non-Telangana students to worry about loss of opportunities,” said Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad, Registrar N V Ramana Rao.
Universities and colleges located close to the capital city have a slight advantage over those in other regions of Telangana, as these provide additional programmes, including job-oriented soft skills enhancement and various training programmes.

Telangana student leaders to jump into poll fray
Nikhila Henry, TNN, May 29, 2013
Hyderabad: The Telangana movement is all set to get a shot in the arm with scores of student leaders planning to step up their struggle after being promised tickets to contest the 2014 Assembly polls by various parties including the TRS, TDP and the BJP.
The student leaders, who had been criticising political parties for taking them for a ride by promising them their due, seem to have buried the hatchet and are eager to take their struggle for statehood outside the university spheres. They came out in open support of their leaders, saying the move was the logical next step and are now setting up offices and rooting to reach out to their voters in the 10 Telangana districts.
“We have been boosting the protests from within the four walls of the university, but it’s time to take up a bigger political struggle,” said Pidamarthi Ravi, a prominent pro-Telangana student leader from Osmania University, which has traditionally been a hotbed for the statehood movement. Ravi is expected to contest on a TRS ticket from Madira in Khammam.

Arts College: a historic masterpiece
The Hindu, Hyderabad, October 8, 2012
The building in pinkish granite stone represents a harmonious blend of pillars and lintel style of Ajanta and Ellora
The architectural uniqueness stirs romance and the stunning structure blows the mind. The unspoiled edifice reveals majesty and is the nucleus of the 95-year old Osmania University. This is the College of Arts and Social Sciences of the famed OU, popularly known as the Arts College. It is one of the major heritage structures in Hyderabad.
A team of experts travelled around the world to find the right design and the right person who could design this historic masterpiece.
The credit for the architecture goes to Monsieur Jasper, a Belgian architect.
Jasper prepared a detailed plan of all the university buildings. The execution of the plans was done by Nawab Zain Yar Jung, who was later awarded a Padma Bhushan for his outstanding service to the field of architecture.

Vijayamma makes successful foray into Telangana
Ravi Reddy, The Hindu, HYDERABAD, June 9, 2012
Public meetings of KCR in Parkal and Sushma Swaraj at Hanamkonda will be watched keenly against this backdrop
The successful foray by YSR Congress honorary president Y.S. Vijayamma into Telangana on Friday has turned to be a game changer in the by-elections to the Parkal Assembly.
The large crowds she drew at Geesukonda, a mandal headquarters, in the afternoon and in Parkal in the night have made the main contenders for the seat, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi and the BJP sit up and take note.
The public meetings proposed to be addressed on Saturday by TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao in Parkal and by BJP leader Sushma Swaraj at Hanamkonda will be watched keenly against this backdrop.
During their day-long campaign Ms. Vijayamma and her daughter Sharmila held forth on how they were being targeted by the ruling party while Congress leaders and TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu got away after the CBI filed similar charges against them.
Ms. Sharmila avoided any reference to Telangana but Ms. Vijayamma was goaded by the crowd to express her views. She recalled late YSR’s statement that Telangana will come when it has to, but the region has to be developed on all fronts in the meantime. At Parkal road show, she elaborated further stating that when YSR was the CLP leader, 41 Congress MLAs led by G.Chinna Reddy had met the AICC president Sonia Gandhi demanding a decision on Telangana. She also said that during the YSR Congress plenary, Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy said it was the Centre, which had to take a decision. “If the Centre decides, it will not take more than a minute to announce separate Telangana,” she said.
