Divided state, divided media
Sevanti Ninan, LIVE MINT & The Wall Street Journal, Wednesday Sep 18, 2013
Andhra Pradesh’s media landscape has become such a chequerboard of affiliations that the politically aligned mediascape in Tamil Nadu pales in comparison.
One of the growth industries triggered by, first, the prospect of, and, now, the impending reality of a separate Telangana state, is media owned by people from the region. Suddenly, it is no longer enough that Andhra Pradesh has far more news channels than any other in the country—some 15, not counting impending and new entrants. What matters is whether the owner belongs to Andhra, or Rayalaseema, or Telangana and whose aspirations the media outlet is striving to represent.
At the end of August, Hyderabad got yet another English newspaper called Metro India. Speeches made on the occasion touched upon the most striking characteristic of the media landscape in this state. Bharatiya Janata Party leader M. Venkaiah Naidu said that if the paper wanted credibility, it should stay away from political affiliation. Chief minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy said he understood that the earlier newspaper from this group was begun out of compulsion, but he believed this one was being launched out of passion. The reference was to Namaste Telangana, the print mouthpiece of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), in which its leader K. Chandrasekhara Rao has a stake.
And the industrialist who part-owns Namaste Telangana and is now launching Metro India, C.L. Rajam, assured his listeners that this paper would strive to remain neutral “as much as possible”. Perhaps to that end, it is published by a company other than the one with a political imprint. A couple of years earlier, another Telangana industrialist started another newspaper and TV channel called The Hans India and HMTV, respectively. Those two have also sought to retain a neutral identity.

Polavaram contract raises Telangana heat
Srinivas Janyala, Indian Express, 23 October 2011
No sooner had the agitation for a separate Telangana state begun to simmer down than it threatens to erupt again: this time over the award of a contract to a construction company linked to a Telugu newspaper in which Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) president K Chandrasekhara Rao is a stakeholder.
Crying foul, the Opposition is accusing the Congress government of buying peace with the TRS via this contract, a charge the government denies.
On October 19, the state government awarded a Rs 4,717-crore contract to Southern Engineering Works (SEW) Infrastructure to execute four major components of the Polavaram Project including spillway, head work, earth-and-rock fill dam and excavation for the 960 MW hydel power generation house.
The government said it saved Rs 600 crore by conducting the tender process for the contract in a transparent manner — SEW was the lowest of five bidders for the four works, quoting 12.6 per cent less than the total value of the work.
SEW Infrastructure has stakes in Intercontinental Infrastructure Ltd, a Hyderabad-based company which, in turn, is a stakeholder in Telangana Publications Pvt Limited that publishes Namaste Telangana. TRS’s Rao has invested Rs 4.12 crore and owns 41.25 lakh shares in Telangana Publications.
The chairman of Intercontinental Infrastructure is C L Rajam, a former Resident Engineer, and later one of the directors of SEW Infrastructure.

I am glad to have participated in the Million March on Tankbund today. It was an unbelievable struggle and an adventure to reach tankbund by 1 pm, thanks to studying in Hyderabad I know the gallies in Ashok Nagar area. Our team has reached the place on time and we took the stairs in the middle of tank bund so there was less resistance compared to the main entrances of tankbund.
Within half an hour, the entire tankbund was jampacked inspite of police blocking all roads to tankbund. Actually all the highways were barricaded for the past few days and they have not allowed any suspicious individuals or groups to enter Hyderabad.
The scene represented war zone. Not sure if we are fighting for a separate state or separate country or do they consider us terrorists. I wish they had the same concern protecting our country borders, we would have definitely not had a Kargil or 26/11 in Mumbai..
Anyway, once we reached tankbund it was festive environment and all groups participated in the march peacefully for a couple of hours… Then small incidents transpired into big and statues were destroyed. I must say it looks much more dramatic on TV than being there. A few guys standing on top of a statue and attempting to destroy is being shown as “Karseva” level demolition
If not for students, lawyers and employees (though they have backstabbed recently) this movement wouldnt have sustained this long. Hats off to them
Of all the political parties, BJP stood out with their presence. TRS was nowhere to be seen. (May be 10% representation among political parties). Muslims played their part very well.
I met many people who are working at the grass root level and I must say that it is because of these die hard supporters the movement is still strong. Their energy is contagious but they are certainly frustrated with political parties.
I am glad to have got the opportunity to directly participate in the event rather than watching on TV.

‘TRS not an appendage to Congress’
Express News Service, 13 November 2010
NEW DELHI: Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) chief K Chandrasekhar Rao on Friday reiterated that his party would support the Congress in its endeavour to secure a Telangana State but took objection to reports that sought to portray him and the TRS as an appendage to the Congress.
Addressing a press conference here after conferring with Justice BN Srikrishna Committee member-secretary VK Duggal, the TRS supremo blew hot and cold at mediapersons for what he called distortion of his last night’s statement but finally said the same thing – he and his party would strengthen the hands of the Congress.
“When I said I would strengthen the hands of the Congress, what I meant was that my party would support the Congress when it moves a bill in Parliament for formation of a Telangana state. What would you expect me to do? Run away without supporting the bill?” Chandrasekhar Rao asked. He said he wanted the Telangana state to have the entire land that had been merged with the rest of Andhra Pradesh on Oct 31, 1956.

Telangana committee: Suicides, bypolls have been noted
Press Trust of India: August 06, 2010
Hyderabad: The Sri Krishna Committee on Friday said it has taken note of the results of the recent bypolls in Telangana region and alleged suicides in support of the statehood demand, but maintained it would not put any kind of “pressure” on the preparation of the final report.
“The Committee is not oblivious to what is happening on the ground. We have taken note of the bypolls results and the entire data is with us. We have also gone through the editorials, the comments in the media. It is very much in the knowledge of the Committee,” V K Duggal, member-secretary of the Committee, told reporters in Hyderabad.
The Committee members were asked how they saw the outcome of the recent by-elections to 12 Assembly constituencies in Telangana region.
Asked if the continuing alleged suicides in support of the Telangana demand or other emotional expression of sentiments in various regions of Andhra Pradesh put any kind of pressure on the committee, Justice Sri Krishna replied in the negative.
“One thing, I think by this time I am beyond all kinds of pressures. It is a fact to be noted….. What inference we draw, we will see,” he said.
“Everything that is happening on the ground, trust us, that has been taken note of. What inference we draw is our privilege,” Duggal and Sri Krishna said in reply to another query.
The committee has so far interacted with 100 groups and received about 1,15,000 representations over the issue, Duggal said.

… leaves all behind to sprint to Nims in style
TNN 22 December 2009, 01:31am IST
HYDERABAD: As president of the AP Olympic Association, Lagadapati Rajagopal knows his sport well. And that may not be politics. On the eighth day of his ‘fast’, 45-year-old Rajagopal effortlessly ran into NIMS on Monday afternoon, ending his 15-hour vanishing act since Sunday night. He headed straight for the Acute Medical Care unit and, as cameras clicked, jumped on a clean bed that seemed to have been awaiting his arrival. Lying straight on his back, Rajagopal closed his eyes and kept one hand on his chest.
The MP entered Nims from its rear gate on Road No. 1, Banjara Hills, and eye witnesses claimed that an auto dropped him outside the main wing of NIMS. To avoid detection, he had discarded the white kurta-pyjama he was wearing when he left the government hospital in Vijayawada. Instead, he made his dramatic entry in a navy blue shirt, a black jacket and grey trousers even as media crews ran after him to catch this act of political daredevilry.

Lagadapati pulls a fast one
TNN 22 December 2009, 01:29am IST
HYDERABAD: Lagadapati Rajagopal’s sprint into Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) has brought the battle over AP back to the very place where it all started with TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao’s ‘fast’.
The Vijayawada Congress MP appears to have made clear his intention: To take on the TRS in the heart of Hyderabad and pitchfork himself as the most eligible Congress leader for the post of CM of the divided area, if and when a new dispensation comes into being.

KCR warns of apocalypse
Express News Service: 18 Dec 2009 08:23:02 AM IST
HYDERABAD: Perhaps to counter signals from Delhi that it could slow down on the Telangana issue, TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao on Thursday upped the ante, warning of catastrophic consequences if the process for creation of a separate State was sought to be derailed.
Pointing out that the Centre had made a decision to bifurcate the State, he said he was willing to cooperate with the UPA Government and give it enough time to go through the due process.
Addressing a press conference here, his first after he broke his indefinite fast on December 9, the TRS president said, “let there be no doubt in anyone’s mind. There is no precedent of the Centre rolling back its decision on an issue like division of a State.” Stating that he and his followers had been observing strategic silence, despite, what he called, “artificial” agitations prompted and promoted by coastal Andhra leaders having vested interests in the region, he thundered: “Our silence should not be viewed as weakness. I will be back in action in a few days and the people of Telangana shall not rest till their flag is hoisted on the Secretariat of the new State.”
