People power driving Telangana agitation
A Srinivasa Rao, India Today, September 30, 2011

The demand for a separate Telangana state appears to have slipped out of the hands of political parties and their leaders. It has turned into a genuine people’s movement, if the 17-day long “Sakala Janula Samme” (movement by people of all sections) is any indication.

As the name suggests, virtually every section of the society has joined the movement which has, by and large, been peaceful so far.
This is evident from the lightening strike by newspaper hawkers in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad on Thursday in support of the Telangana cause. As a result, not a single newspaper could reach readers in any part of the state capital. Even those who rushed to newspaper stalls to buy the dailies were disappointed as the vendors, too, joined the strike for Telangana.

Hundreds of newspaper hawkers took out rally to the Telangana martyrs’ memorial at Secunderabad Clock Tower. But the police prevented them and arrested many of them, including Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) convenor Prof. M. Kodandaram.

When the indefinite strike began on September 13 after several postponements, the TJAC and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi were not happy with the response because the people it is a question of survival. That was why the TJAC announced that the strike would take place in a phased manner. (మరింత…)

TRS leaders to lay siege on city
Deccan Chronicle, September 20, 2011, Hyderabad

Telangana activists, who blocked highways across the region on Monday, are planning to lay siege on Hyderabad in October. The Telangana Rashtra Samiti deputy floor leader in the Assembly, Mr T. Harish Rao, said that a “Chalo Hyderabad” programme would be held next month. “The agitations will continue till Telangana is achieved,” he said during the rasta roko on National Highway 9 at Zaheerabad in Medak district. Mr Rao warned that if the Centre failed to take a positive decision on Telangana immediately, the agitators would block the highways every day. The TRS MP, Ms Vijayashanti, blasted Congress leaders for “sitting in AC rooms” at a time when lakhs of Telangana people were blocking the highways under the hot sun. (మరింత…)

Telangana Congress for Hyderabad as joint capital for 10 yrs
TNN | Sep 20, 2011,

HYDERABAD: Telangana Congress leaders are ready for a negotiated settlement on the status of Hyderabad to facilitate the early division of the state. Under this proposal, Hyderabad would be a centrally administered district till such time as the new capital for the Seemandhra region is ready.

This proposal has been formulated incorporating certain demands of the Seemandhra leaders to allay the apprehensions of those who have properties and business establishments in Hyderabad. T Congress leaders also think that this is a workable alternative on the status of Hyderabad among a bouquet of suggestions. (మరింత…)

Telangana strike: Schools forced to remain shut
PTI, 20 September 2011

Hyderabad: Major private schools in and around Hyderabad were forced to declare a holiday on Tuesday after the Telangana Joint Action Committee warned them of consequences.

JAC leader M Kodandaram said all missionary and private schools in the state capital should be closed and take part in the ongoing general strike “respecting the sentiments of the people of Telangana”.
This is the first time in the ongoing agitation for a separate state that the JAC issued a threat to private schools.

Kodandaram specifically mentioned names of Delhi Public School and Oakridge International School even as he warned other private aided and un-aided schools as well. (మరింత…)

Telangana stir: AP faces industrial crisis
Ashok Das, Hindustan Times, Hyderabad, September 15, 2011

Andhra Pradesh is on the verge of an economic crisis as the strike by miners of Singareni Collieries to press for Telangana is threatening to create a power scarcity in the state. And the problem posed by the strike is compounded by the general shutdown for the third consecutive day in 10 districts in support of Telangana.

Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy appealed to employees to call off the shutdown. However, Telangana Joint Action Committee chairman M Kodandaram on Thursday called upon the people to intensify the strike.
State-owned power distribution companies have imposed unscheduled power cuts ranging from two to three hours all over Andhra Pradesh as power generation came down by more than 30% due to the coal shortage arising out of the strike. (మరింత…)

Jayasudha turns her back on Jagan Reddy
The New Indian Express, Sep 16, 2011

HYDERABAD: Secunderabad Congress MLA Jayasudha is thinking of distancing herself from YSR Congress chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy whom she supported while he was in the party and has been sailing with after he left the party. This became evident from her chat she had with Express here on Thursday. She said: “There is no point in resigning on the Telangana issue since those who did so were only enacting a drama to deceive people. If all of them are really committed to the cause, they should go to Delhi and mount pressure on the Centre. Let all of them stage a dharna in front of 10, Janpath,” she says. (మరింత…)
