Police cane villagers, lob tear gas shells as Mallanna Sagar protest turns bloody

Express News Service, 25 July 2016

SANGAREDDY: The Mallanna Sagar project oustees agitation took a ‘bloody’ turn on Sunday with police caning the villagers, resulting in injuries to dozens of people. Police opened fire in the air and lobbed tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

All Opposition parties called for Medak district bandh on Monday protesting against the police action against the villagers. It is alleged that the police caned the villagers, including women and children indiscriminately, and even dragged people out of their houses and beat them up.

Two of the submergence villages, Erravelli and Vemulaghat, resembled war zone with the locals fighting a pitched battle with police throughout most part of the day. Trouble began when some villagers of Vemulaghat, who were on a 50-day relay hunger strike against the Mallanna Sagar project, tried to lay siege to national highway protesting the government’s attitude in going ahead with the project inspite of objection from locals.

The villagers were stopped near Pallepahad crossroads. Police stopped them from marching ahead citing imposition of prohibitory orders in the villages. The villagers entered into a heated argument with police and a scuffle ensued between the two sides. Police caned the villagers and in the lathicharge, eight villagers including women were injured. Two women fell unconscious. At the same time, the villagers of Erravelli were holding a grama sabha in their village. As they got the news of police action on Vemulaghat villagers, the Erravelli villagers too decided to lay seige on the national highway and marched towards the main road. (మరింత…)

Hyderabad: The ministry of environment and forests’ (MoEF) orders regarding the Polavaram project — to keep the ‘stop the work order’ in abeyance — lapsed a week ago. The ministry had issued the abeyance order earlier from June 30, 2015, for a year regarding the stop work order issued previously.

This was issued initially on February 8, 2011 due to non compliance of the condition for an environment clearance, namely, conducting a public hearing in Chattisgarh and Odisha. (మరింత…)

Telangana: Poor women tricked into slavery in Gulf

Jan 13, 2016 | Age Correspondent | Hyderabad

Agents take money from employers promising cheap labour.

Hyderabad: When his wife called him from Saudi Arabia three days after landing there and started crying, Ali bin Yusuf Barkath thought she must be homesick.

The 40-year-old Parveen, who went to work as a maid in a Saudi national’s house, told Yusuf “It’s terrible. I cannot stay here anymore.”

After eight days when Yusuf talked to her, things were worse. “She told me that she was made to work from morning to midnight. They did not give her food on some days. She could not speak properly fearing her employer would snatch her phone,” said Yusuf, an autorickshaw driver.

The next conversation with Parveen shocked Yusuf. He became convinced that she was being pushed into bonded labour.

“When she protested, her employer told her that he bought her paying money to the visa agent. He told her that she cannot leave for two years as per the deal with the agent,” said Yusuf. (మరింత…)

Rape, cyber crime rose in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh in 2014 even as crime rate declined
Friday, 2 January 2015, PTI

The crime rate in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana saw a slight decline in 2014 though rape and cyber crime cases rose while police arrested an aide of Indian Mujahideen ‘media in-charge’ and foiled attempts by some youths including an ex-Google employee to join ISIS.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) tasted success by arresting Myanmarese national Khaleed alias Mohammed Khalid, one of the prime accused in the Burdwan blast case. Hyderabad Police on October 22 arrested Shah Mudassir alias Talha, a member of SIMI and Shoeb Ahmed Khan alias Tariq Bhai, an associate of Mansoor Ali Peerboy (media in-charge of Indian Mujahideen, Pune Module), from Secunderabad here. Police said the duo from Maharashtra were allegedly planning to go to Afghanistan to get training from al Qaeda for carrying out terror activities in India.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy said they were in the process of collecting enough evidence against Hyderabadi youth Mothasim Billah, a former SIMI activist, who had promised to finance their travel to Afghanistan.

In August, Hyderabad Police “foiled” an attempt by a group of four young men from the city, including two engineers, to join ISIS after they were tracked down to Kolkata from where they were allegedly preparing to flee to Iraq.

Similarly, 30-year-old former Google employee Munawad Salman, who was allegedly plotting to join ISIS was detained by Hyderabad Police in October. They also counselled a 21-year-old student, who too was allegedly in touch with a suspected ISIS activist over a social networking site.

The overall crime graph showed a minuscule 0.41 per cent decline in Telangana with a total of 93,392 cognisable cases reported in 2014 compared with 93,780 cases in 2013, though cases of molestation (‘outraging modesty’) and rape increased in Telangana in 2014 compared with the previous year. Cyber crime cases went up to 618 in 2014 from 334 last year. (మరింత…)

Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra lock horns over Babli project on Godavari waters

Amarnath K Menon, India Today, Hyderabad, October 17, 2012

Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, both Congress ruled states, are locked in a bitter battle over the sharing of the Godavari waters and the impounding of the water at the Babli project in Maharashtra. The all party demand in Andhra Pradesh is for the demolition of the Babli project even as the Supreme Court has on Tuesday deferred further hearing on the dispute until November 8.

The execution of the Babli project and the drawing water from its reservoir as well as 11 projects upstream in Maharashtra in violation of the orders of the Central Water Commission would adversely affect the flow of the Godavari waters to irrigate farms in Telangana and turn the region into an arid zone.

“The Maharashtra administration and local farmers are not allowing us even to visit the project,” said the Andhra Pradesh major irrigation minister A. Sudarshan Reddy. Though the Maharashtra claim is that it is only tapping 60 thousand million cubic feet (TMC ft) of water the contention of Andhra Pradesh is that its computation is that the upper riparian state is already drawing 65.35 TMC ft. ‘Telangana movement is propelled by people, not TRS or KCR’
The New Indian Express, September 24, 2012

BJP state president G Kishan Reddy speaks on Telangana Movement, Telangana March, etc in an interview to Express.

Q) What is your view on the Telangana Joint Action Committee’s call for ‘Telangana March’ in the city on September 30?
A) The TJAC has decided the programme without consulting it’s political constituents. However, the BJP has extended it’s solidarity and decided to take part in the programme. BJP leaders of the Telangana districts would soon meet to prepare an action plan for making the march a grand success

Q) TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao is maintaining silence on the Telangana March. Do you think the programme will be organised at the expected level?
A) What do you mean? You should not forget past experiences! TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao did not take part in any programme for which a call was given by the TJAC. But, the BJP has played an active role in every programme. Even the Million March was not supported by the TRS. To protect his existence, KCR took part in it at the final hour.

Q) TRS chief claims that the TRS and the Telangana Movement are one and the same. What do you say?
A) It is wrong and that sort of image has been cultivated by certain sections of the media. If that was true, how come the TRS chief failed in the Mahabubnagar Assembly constituency by-elections which falls under his own parliamentary constituency? How come TRS win the Parakal by-election by only a margin of 1500 votes? TRS is just one of the political parties in the region and not the whole Telangana Movement. (మరింత…)

Parkal result a wake up call for Telangana Rashtra Samithi
Arun Kumar Govindraj, TNN, June 16, 2012

HYDERABAD: The close finish in Parkal between K Chandrasekhar Rao’s Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and Jaganmohan Reddy’s YSR Congress has thrown up serious questions about the strength of the ongoing separate Telangana movement with the TRS itself admitting that it needs to regroup and introspect.

TRS ought to be worried by the slender majority of 1,562 votes by which its candidate Moluguri Bikshapati won as Parkal lies in the heart of Telangana statehood movement — Warangal. TRS earlier had boasted that it would win by a majority of 35,000-40,000 votes. But evidently, the voter was equally divided between the pro-Telangana protagonist and a party which espouses the united Andhra cause.

In fact, the fight turned out to be a bit like a T-20 cricket match with leads swinging back and forth between the TRS and YSR CP. Bhikhapati, who was leading comfortably with 5,999-vote lead till the 12th round, slipped to a slender majority of 283 votes in the 17th round. At one point, YSR CP’s Konda Surekha led by 16 votes. The TRS candidate gained in the last 19th round and snatched victory. But where did the TRS calculations go wrong? The Friday’s result is not only a wake up call for the party but raises questions on the effectiveness of the movement. (మరింత…)

Vijayamma makes successful foray into Telangana
Ravi Reddy, The Hindu, HYDERABAD, June 9, 2012

Public meetings of KCR in Parkal and Sushma Swaraj at Hanamkonda will be watched keenly against this backdrop

The successful foray by YSR Congress honorary president Y.S. Vijayamma into Telangana on Friday has turned to be a game changer in the by-elections to the Parkal Assembly.

The large crowds she drew at Geesukonda, a mandal headquarters, in the afternoon and in Parkal in the night have made the main contenders for the seat, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi and the BJP sit up and take note.

The public meetings proposed to be addressed on Saturday by TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao in Parkal and by BJP leader Sushma Swaraj at Hanamkonda will be watched keenly against this backdrop.

During their day-long campaign Ms. Vijayamma and her daughter Sharmila held forth on how they were being targeted by the ruling party while Congress leaders and TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu got away after the CBI filed similar charges against them.

Ms. Sharmila avoided any reference to Telangana but Ms. Vijayamma was goaded by the crowd to express her views. She recalled late YSR’s statement that Telangana will come when it has to, but the region has to be developed on all fronts in the meantime. At Parkal road show, she elaborated further stating that when YSR was the CLP leader, 41 Congress MLAs led by G.Chinna Reddy had met the AICC president Sonia Gandhi demanding a decision on Telangana. She also said that during the YSR Congress plenary, Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy said it was the Centre, which had to take a decision. “If the Centre decides, it will not take more than a minute to announce separate Telangana,” she said. Jagan mother Vijaya Lakshmi faces no trouble in Telangana region

Agencies: Warangal , Jun 08 2012

YSR Congress leader Y S Vijaya Lakshmi had a smooth passage in Telangana region during her campaign for the June 12 by-polls, unlike other top leaders from non-Telangana regions who have faced anger of supporters of the separate statehood.

Vijaya Lakshmi and her daughter Sharmila recently campaigned in Parkal Assembly segment in Warangal district, the hotbed of statehood agitation, for the YSR Congress’s Konda Surekha.

Top leaders including TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and even YSR Congress president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy had faced strong protests, often violent, from Telangana supporters.

Jagan had to abort his plan to undertake `odarpu yatra’ in Warangal district two years ago following violent clashes between his supporters and pro-Telangana supporters at Mahabubabad railway station.

But Vijaya Lakshmi had a smooth going mainly because TRS and Telangana political Joint Action Committee (JAC) decided not to oppose her campaign. TRS, however, asked why Jagan held a placard in support of united Andhra Pradesh in Parliament couple of years ago, while JAC wanted Vijaya Lakshmi to spell out her party’s stand on the separate statehood demand. Telangana will emerge from post-poll crisis: KCR
Express News Service, 30 May 2012

HYDERABAD: Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K Chandrasekhara Rao expects a political crisis of unprecedented dimensions after the byelections on June 12 for one Lok Sabha and 18 Assembly seats in the state, forcing the Congress to accede to the demand for bifurcation of the state.

The Centre is unable to take a decision though the entire ground work has already been done for it to formulate its opinion. AICC general secretary and Union minister Ghulam Nabhi Azad has already submitted his report to the core committee. Recently, AICC observer and Union minister Vayalar Ravi tot submitted his report to the party high command. (మరింత…)
