Move to affiliate Medak colleges with TU stalled
New Indian Express, 30 Jun 2010
HYDERABAD: The state government’s move to affiliate all professional colleges in Medak district to Telangana University (TU) in Nizamabad district was strongly opposed by Cabinet ministers – Geeta Reddy and Sunitha Lakshma Reddy – besides TRS senior leader T Harish Rao who hails from the district.
The result: Decision withdrawn! In March, the department of Higher Education has decided to affiliate all the private, aided, unaided and government colleges in Adilabad, Medak and Nizamabad districts to TU.
A similar decision was taken with respect to all the new universities, which were started three year ago during the regime of former chief minister late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.
Sources in Telangana University said all the public representatives of the district including the ministers, legislators and leaders of all the political parties lobbied with Chief Minister K Rosaiah. The Chief Minister who came under severe pressure ordered for scrapping of the order immediately. (మరింత…)

It will not be a clean sweep for TRS: Narayana
Express News Service, 27 Jun 2010
VIJAYAWADA: Communist Party of India state secretary K Narayana has prophesied that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi would retain majority of the seats in the byelections to the Assembly. It would not be a clean sweep for the TRS, nor the result would have any bearing on the formation of Telangana state, he said.
Speaking to press persons here today, he said the CPI would not contest the elections as its results would have no impact in the state, he said.
He wondered why the TRS MPs, including the party supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao, had not resigned in support of the party MLAs if they were really committed to the separate state issue.
The CPI would maintain a neutral stand and not issue a whip to the party workers on whom to vote in the byelections. Disclosing the resolutions passed at the three day party state council meeting in the city, he said that they would launch Bhuporatam (land struggle) at 150 centres in the state on July 5. (మరింత…)

Telangana solution must be palatable to all: TDP
Express News Service, 26 Jun 2010 11:12:11 AM IST
HYDERABAD: The issue of statehood for Telangana should be settled amicably and to the satisfaction of the people of all the regions, Telugu Desam president N Chandrababu Naidu has said. Without elaborating on what he meant, he asserted that there was no ambiguity in his stance.
Speaking to media persons here today, Naidu said people from all regions of the state supported him and made him chief minister for nine long years. He would therefore treat both the regions as a pair of his eyes, he said and recalled that the TDP had always stood for the Telugu pride as a whole. It was the Congress which created the division among the people for its survival, he alleged and asked his party-men to act in accordance with the aspirations of the people of their respective regions.
Referring to by-elections to the Assembly in the Telangana region he said the TDP was forced by the Congress to contest the by-elections. As a political party the TDP had no other option, he said. (మరింత…)

TRS raises pitch on Telangana ahead of bypolls
PTI, 25 Jun 2010 06:07:10 PM IST
HYDERABAD: Asserting that there will be a “great war” after the Srikrishna Committee on Telangana submitted its report by December-end, TRS President K Chandrasekhar Rao today asked students and other Telangana supporters to be prepared for it.
“A great war will be inevitable after December. We have to keep our weapons sharp. Weapon is building a strong party organisation. Party leaders said they would enroll 10 lakh members. If these 10 lakh come onto the streets after December, can the government function?” he said, addressing the executive committee meeting of the party’s student wing. (మరింత…)

Bypoll acid test for first timers
Special Correspondent, The Hindu, June 22, 2010
Six to test electoral fortunes for the second time in 14 months
HYDERABAD: Next month’s elections to 10 Assembly constituencies in Telangana will be an acid test for the political careers of at least six candidates – five from the Telangana Rashtra Samiti and one from the Bharatiya Janata Party – who resigned from the Assembly in support for separate Telangana.
These six will be testing their electoral fortunes for the second time within 14 months of their maiden entry into the Assembly whereas the remaining four MLAs who resigned Etala Rajender, T. Harish Rao, E. Ravinder Reddy and K. Eshwar are veterans of earlier battles.
Kaveti Sammaiah (Sirpur), N. Odelu (Chennur), G. Aravind Reddy (Mancherial), K. Vidyasagar Rao (Korutla) and D. Vinay Bhaskar (Warangal West) are all from the TRS, while E. Lakshminarayana (Nizamabad Urban) of BJP emerged as giant killer by trouncing PCC president D. Srinivas with a comfortable margin of 11,015 votes.
Two other ex-MLAs who were elected for the first time — Chennmaneni Ramesh of TDP (Vemulwada) and KCR’s son, K. T. Rama Rao (Sircilla) — will have to wait for some more time as the EC has decided against holding byelections to these two constituencies now as election petitions against them are pending in the High Court.

TRS may lend tacit support to PCC chief
Express News Service, 8 Jun 2010
HYDERABAD: The ensuing by elections in Telangana might well be a precursor to future developments in the Congress, apart from testing the strength of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).
According to informed sources, behind-the scenes moves have begun to facilitate a victory for PCC president D Srinivas from Nizamabad Assembly constituency in the byelection, expected during July-August.
Interestingly, the party that is not averse to favouring Srinivas is the TRS whose 10 MLAs quit the Assembly demanding statehood for the region. (మరింత…)

A slice of history
M. L. Narasimham, The Hindu May 27, 2010
‘Veera Telangana’ goes back in time to capture the historic struggle by farmers.
His commitment to progressive cinema is total and unquestionable. He is perhaps the only filmmaker who has made all his films based on the ideology that he has strongly believed. Actor, writer, director, producer and music director R. Narayana Murthy is celebrating his silver jubilee year as a producer in a grand manner by bringing to celluloid a subject close to his heart, Veera Telangana. This will be his 22nd production under Sneha Chitra banner. Most of the actors are newcomers and hail from Telangana region. Murthy played the revolutionary ballad singer yadagiri famous for his lyric, bandenka bandi katti… that reverberated throughout the region in 1944-50 during the Telangana farmers’ armed struggle.
“The story dates back to that period when the Telangana farmers uprising, spearheaded by the Communist Party of India, took place in which about 3,500 villages participated and about 4000 people became martyrs. The struggle is to get their land back, to have a square meal and to liberate themselves from bonded labour. As a result of the armed struggle, about 10 lakh acres of land was distributed to the landless. Ironically, they could not get the land pattas.
“Under the Nizam rule, Doras, Deshmukhs, jagirdars, zamindars, Patels and Patwaris wielded power. On September 15, 1947, when the Nizam surrendered to the Union army, these Doras to Patwaris changed their colours and caps. They wore Gandhi caps and the Union army handed over the hard-won land by the poor farmers to the landlords. This is the genesis of the plight of a Telangana farmer that we are witnessing even today, after over 60 years after Independence. His life did not change for the better. In fact it has become worse. For this film, I have taken incidents that happened between 1944 and 1950,” said Narayana Murthy. (మరింత…)
