3 TRS MLAs accused of cross-voting resign from party posts

Sify.com 2011-03-19

Hyderabad: Three TRS MLAs today submitted resignation from their posts following allegations that they had cross voted for the Congress in the elections to the Legislative Council two days ago.

While two MLAs – K Vidyasagar Rao and Y Ravinder Reddy – submitted their resignation letter to their party president K Chandrasekhar Rao ahead of the party’s politburo meeting this evening, another legislator Kaveti Sammaiah faxed it.

The needle of suspicion pointed towards these three legislators as having ditched the party.

Vidyasagar Rao and Ravinder Reddy told newsmen that they would rather quit their posts than bear the insinuations that they had cross voted against the party. (మరింత…)

Present system of environmental assessment flawed: Ramesh
The Pioneer, March 19, 2011 10:40:27 PM

PTI | Hyderabad

Admitting that the present system of preparing environmental assessment report is flawed, Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh today said the Ministry would now seek third-party opinion to evaluate the projects.

He also informed that the Ministry would soon map the wetland areas in the country to formulate a better definition of the same.

The Minister said the present system of preparing environmental assessment report is flawed and the Ministry itself would take third party opinion on environment in projects like coal, power and construction of ports.

“We have done the satellite mapping of all wet lands in the country. We have wetland atlas of every state which will be released by month-end. So far we did not follow scientific approach of wetland management as in revenue record, wet land is recorded as waste land. All these are legacies of the past. We will clean up the system,” the Minister told reporters on the sidelines of Green Landscape Summit-2011 organised by CII.

He also ridiculed the present system of preparing the environmental assessment report by the company itself which is proposing to set up a project.

“Environmental impact assessment report is bit of joke. I admit it publicly. In our system the person who is putting up the project will be preparing the assessment report. I have been very concerned about this. Supreme Court has also expressed its concern,” Ramesh said. (మరింత…)

3 TRS MLAs vote for Congress
Deccan Chronicle, March 18, 2001

March 17: It was a rude jolt to the Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief, Mr K. Chandrasekhar Rao, when three TRS MLAs were suspected to have cross voted in the MLCs elections here on Thursday.

The TRS nominee, Mr Mahamood Ali, got only 11 votes as against the anticipated 14 — 11 TRS, two BJP MLAs, Mr G. Kishan Reddy and Mr Laxminarayana, and the rebel Telugu Desam MLA, Mr Pocharam Srinivas Reddy. The TRS leadership is tight-lipped and refused to comment on the cross voting, saying merely that they are trying to investigate what went wrong. (మరింత…)

Telangana: History and economy
G Naga Sridhar, Business Line, March 15, 2011

If the Vijayanagara ruler Sri Krishnadevaraya (AD 1509-29), who strived to further the Telugu language and culture, was alive today, he would have jumped into the Hussain Sagar lake in Hyderabad. The reason: He would been thrown into despair at the nihilistic cultural attitude displayed by a section of the pro-Telanagana activists, who destroyed 18 statues (out of 33) of legendary personalities of Telugu land during the ‘Million March’ on March 10 in support of Telangana State, just because they did not hail from what now is being termed Telangana.

The statues of great saint-composer Annamayya, 19th Century social reformer Kandukuri Veeresalingam and Sir Arthur Cotton (1803-1899), the first British engineer to envisage a complete system of irrigation and canals for India, too faced the same fate. Not that these statues are rare artefacts. They were sculpted and installed just about 25 years ago. But what is alarming is the attitude that refuses to see the distinction between blind jingoism and a sagacious sense of regionalism. (మరింత…)

Professor who couldn’t steal a march on leader
Sreenivasa Janyala, Indian Express 14 March 2011

One is a politician, the other a professor of political science at Osmania University. Each is trying to upstage the other in the Telangana movement.

Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) president K Chandrashekhara Rao wants to keep the agitation under his control but Prof M Kodanda Rama Reddy, 55, chairman of Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC), hopes to wrest the initiative.

On Thursday, the academician tried to make a statement with a “Million March” but the rally turned violent, with MPs attacked and statues of Telugu icons vandalised, and ended up putting a black mark on the professor’s reputation. (మరింత…)

My art is my aspiration for Telangana: Thota Vaikuntam
Sify
New Delhi, March 12 (IANS) The art of Thota Vaikuntam, leading Indian figurative painter, remains loyal to the aspiration for autonomy and a distinct socio-cultural identity of his native turf, Telangana.

Vaikuntam is described as the most visible face of Telangana, his lines reflecting the battle for a separate state.

Considered one of the best figurative artists in the country, Vaikuntam is often feted as the ‘Jamini Roy of the south’.

He has exhibited worldwide and has been honoured with nine national and state awards.

‘My art is my village, Boorugupally in Karimnagar district in Andhra Pradesh, the soul of the crusade for a separate identity for Telangana. My art will never move out of my village and people,’ 69-year-old Vaikuntam told IANS. (మరింత…)
