The University was first set up in 1917, under the rule of Nizam Osman Ali Khan.
Nitin B., The NEWS Minute, April 25, 2017
The year was 1917, and Sir Akbar Hydari, who was then the Home Secretary to the Hyderabad State Government under Nizam Osman Ali Khan, submitted a memorandum to the then Education Minister of the state.
The memorandum emphasised the need to establish a University in Hyderabad, with ‘Urdu’ as the medium of instruction “as it is the language of the widest currency in India, official language of the State, and it is a language which is understood by a vast majority of the population of the State.”
The memorandum had come at a time when several people, especially intellectuals, were thinking about ways to cater to the interest for higher education, which had grown in the state.
Taking the memorandum into consideration, the Nizam issued a ‘firman’, or order, on April 26, 1917, to establish a university in Hyderabad.
A 100 years later, the Osmania University in Hyderabad is all set to host its centenary celebrations. (మరింత…)

A drift between Kodandram and KCR was inevitable, for, their means towards the end were different.
Pavan Korada, TheNEWSMinute, Friday, February 24, 2017
More often than not, it so happens that every legitimate political struggle has two fronts. The words ‘legitimate’ and ‘political’ themselves represent the function and evolution of each front. The struggle acquires legitimacy — as a genuine people’s aspiration — through grassroots mass-mobilisation, usually a feature of participatory democracy. And once this popular aspiration is digested by the people and snowballs into a mass movement, then a second front emerges. This front now has to fight the political battle within the existent power structure. In a parliamentary democracy, the latter usually takes the form of a political vanguard party. (మరింత…)

Rahul to visit Mallanna Sagar villages?
Express News Service, 30 July 2016
Hyderabad: Will AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi make a surprise visit to Telangana and join the party’s fight in support of Mallanna Sagar project oustees demand of compensation as per Land Acquisition Act 2013?
Yes, say highly placed sources in the Congress party. Like in the University of Hyderabad protests during the suicide of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula, Rahul Gandhi is likely to make a surprise visit to the state and the proposed submergence villages under Mallanna Sagar project.
The state government’s crackdown on those supporting the Mallanna Sagar oustees gave the Congress the much needed ammunition to launch an agitation and it wants to take full advantage of the situation by bringing Rahul Gandhi to the state and join the agitation. Sources said senior Congress leaders received a communication from the party high command of Rahul Gandhi’s likely visit to Mallanna Sagar villages in the next couple of days. (మరింత…)

Telangana: KCR to perform another Yagam, to ‘banish developmental hurdles’
Srinivasa Aro Apparasu, Hindustan Times, Hyderabad, July 14, 2016
Known for his staunch belief in ancient Hindu customs, Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is all set to appease Lord Vishnu in a big way. He is preparing for yet another major Vedic ceremony, this time to apparently ward off ‘evil forces causing hurdles’ in implementing government programmes.
Preparations are on for KCR performing the Sudarshana Yagam in his assembly constituency in Medak district next month. The detailed religious ritual will be held at Gajwel on August 7 to invoke Sudarshana, the mythological disc associated with Lord Vishnu in decimating evil forces.
The 62-year-old CM will perform the Yagam along with the family. Ahead of its start at Gajwel town, he will formally inaugurate the first phase of his government’s Mission Bhagiratha that aims to provide drinking water to every household, according to Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao, who is a nephew of KCR. Telangana University opens e-resource centre for TSPSC exams
P Ram Mohan, The Hindu, Nizamabad, January 10, 2016
V-C has given green signal to purchase any number of books required by students, says Registrar
Dozens of coaching centres have emerged across the district with a series of notifications coming for recruitment of various jobs in the State government. Aspirants of jobs are thronging coaching centres and libraries for serious preparation.
They, however, seem to be struggling to find relevant syllabus in books and magazine available at the libraries. They find it difficult to get authentic information on Telangana politics, economics, culture and festivals, geography, general history, and history of the 60-year-old agitation for separate Statehood and also on current affairs.
The market is flooded with books written by several writers, but aspirants do not feel satisfied with the contents in them. They have been waiting for the books written by eminent writers being published by the Telugu Academy. Meanwhile, coaching centres are searching for senior faculty members and experts in general studies to engage them in their centres. (మరింత…)

Why Telangana’ KCR has got nickname of ‘rollback CM’
Prasad Nichenametla, Hindustan Times, Hyderabad, September 13, 2015
Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has acquired a reputation for being a quick decision-maker, except that the decisions are rolled back just as quickly.
Political rivals dubbed him “Rollback CM” after a series of decisions Rao took upon becoming the first chief minister of the country’s newest state in June last year were shelved under public pressure.
“When a CM takes a decision, he should consider all the pros and cons beforehand. Rao is driven by momentary emotions. His decisions prove he lacks the maturity to head a state,” Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, working president, Telangana Congress, told HT.
The CM, on his part, has put up a wavering defence of his decisions, only to yield quickly to swelling resentment from various quarters. (మరింత…)
