Behind suicide, no job, a bagful of dreams

Sreenivas Janyala
New Indian Express, Feb 22, 2010

Hyderabad: Among the six persons who have committed suicide, allegedly over the Telangana issue, the case of 19-year-old Siripuram Yadaiah stands out. He lost both his parents in childhood and grew up in the V M Home for Orphans at Kothapet. He studied up to class 10 and dropped out of school to become a photographer in a private photo studio when he was 16 but quit soon.

Drifting aimlessly, a year ago he landed a job as a cashier at Satya Restaurant in Kothapet. On February 20, at 2 pm, after protesting students who were halted by the police at Vidyanagar decided to abandon their efforts to break the police cordon and proceed to the Assembly, Yadaiah took out a bottle of petrol from his bag, doused himself and lit a match. He succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning at the DRDO Apollo Hospital. (మరింత…)

Telangana Committee next week: Chidambaram

Press Trust of India, January 28, 2010, New Delhi

Home Minister P Chidambaram announced on Thursday that a committee on Telangana would be formed in a week.

“We are sticking to our word. We will have the names more or less finalised by the end of this week and perhaps by early next week, you will have the committee announced,” Chidambaram said.

The political representatives from Telangana had set January 28 as the deadline for the Centre to announce a timeframe for the formation of the new state. And they had threatened to resign enmasse in case Centre failed to keep its promise. The Centre’s latest move comes as if to preempt the mass resignations.

Congress representatives from Telangana claim the announcement is a definite move forward but the other members of the political Joint Action Committee (JAC) are far from impressed. (మరింత…)

India Telangana separate state protests turn violent
BBC News 08:20 GMT, Wednesday, 20 January 2010

Violent protests have taken place in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh to support the demand for a separate Telangana state.

Police have used sticks to break up a protest by students in Hyderabad city. A strike has shut down large parts of the state. The strike was called after a student committed suicide on Monday.

In December, the Indian government said that Telangana would be carved out of northern districts, but later said more consultations were needed. The state has seen violent protests for and against the proposed new state in recent weeks.

Violent protests

The strike has affected life in 10 districts of the state, including Hyderabad city, the BBC’s Omer Farooq in Hyderabad says.

The state authorities have taken 4,000 buses off the road to prevent them from being attacked and vandalised by the protesters. Shops, businesses, schools and colleges are closed.

Police have used batons to break up a demonstration by students at Osmania university. At least six students have been injured in the attack. (మరింత…)

Student’s suicide in OU puts Telangana on the boil again
TNN, 20 January 2010, 04:11am IST

HYDERABAD: Telangana is on the boil once again after the suspected suicide of an MCA student on the Osmania University campus.

Hundreds of angry OU students called for a bandh on Wednesday and demanded the resignations of all elected representatives from the region in order to give momentum to the separate state movement.

By Tuesday night, the OU students placed the body of their mate outside Arts College and vowed not to allow it to be taken from there until all the MPs and MLAs quit their posts.

In response to the students’ demand, five MLAs from TRS and one from PRP went to Speaker N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s residence in the evening and pressed for the acceptance of their resignations. But with the Speaker telling them that he would take a decision in two to three days, they staged a dharna. They were later arrested and released by the police .

TDP MLA E Dayakar Rao said all the 39 party MLAs from the region would do the same on Wednesday. While BJP and two MLAs from PRP said they would also follow suit, the heat is on the Congress MLAs and MPs, who have two options: Either obey the diktat of their high command not to press for the acceptance of their resignations or face the wrath of the Telangana people.

What triggered the day’s developments was the discovery of a totally charred body of K Venugopal Reddy under a tree near Tagore Auditorium on the OU campus by morning walkers. Reddy, a 23-year-old MCA final-year student of Lalitha PG and Degree College in Ghatkesar, hailed from Nalgonda district and used to stay at Nacharam. (మరింత…)
