Stunned Desam looks for answer
Deccan Chronicle, August 1, 2010

July 31: The by-poll results have forced the Telugu Desam (TD) into a soul searching mood. It is trying to find reasons for its poor show in the polls. The party chief, Mr Chandrababu Naidu, on Saturday held a meeting with leaders from the Telangana region and asked for a detailed feedback on the causes for the party’s debacle. All the 12 Assembly seats that went for polls were once considered TD strongholds, they now look deserted going by the percentage of votes polled by the party nominees.

At one stage Mr Naidu was stunned and asked the party leaders, “when there are 7,500 active members enrolled in party in Nizamabad town, how the party nominee got only 1,793 votes.” Similarly, in Warangal West Assembly segment, in Division No 38, which is held by the party corporator, Mr Dasaradharama Rao, only one vote was polled in favour of the TD candidate, Mr V. Narender Reddy. (మరింత…)

By-election verdict a slap on the face for Congress, TDP’

PTI, Hyderabad July 31, 2010

Former Union Minister and BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya on Saturday said the by-election verdict in Andhra Pradesh was a slap on the face of ruling Congress and opposition party TDP. Both the parties had an ambivalent attitude on the issue of separate Telangana state. The state Chief Minister K Rosaiah and TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu never made their stand clear on separate statehood for Telangana, Dattatreya said on Saturday.

The by-election verdict was a clear mandate in favour of Telangana state, he asserted. (మరింత…)

Telangana bypolls: EVMs may be used in 7 constituencies
Special Correspondent , The Hindu, Jul 11, 2010

HYDERABAD: The option of deploying electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the ensuing Assembly byelections in the Telangana region became available to the Election Commission following the rejection of as many as 213 nomination papers of independents during scrutiny on Saturday.

As a result, the number of nominations in six out of the 12 constituencies fell below 64, the maximum number that can be handled by the EVMs. The scrutiny was conducted by central observers deputed by the Election Commission after the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) asked hundreds of its partymen to file nominations as a ploy to pre-empt the use of EVMs, which, it feels, can be tampered with. This had swelled the number of candidates to 926.

The number of nominations in Nizamabad (Urban) constituency was below 64 even before this exercise was undertaken. Consequently, EVMs are likely to be used in Nizamabad (14 nominations), Sirpur (55), Chennur-SC (60), Mancherial (49), Dharmapuri-SC (61), Vemulawada (42) and Siddipet (45). (మరింత…)

EVMs: BJP ‘lets down’ TRS
Special Correspondent, The Hindu, Jul 11, 2010

– Did not go for mass filing of nomination papers
– BJP Central leadership not totally against EVMs
– KCR’s daughter to campaign in Nizamabad on July 12 and 13

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) had suggested to the BJP with which the former has seat sharing arrangement in the coming by-elections to ensure mass filing of nominations but obviously its efforts failed.

TRS leaders insisted that they had asked the BJP to follow suit in Nizamabad (Urban) constituency as in the remaining eleven segments where activists of the former filed nominations in large numbers to compel the Election Commission to introduce electronic voting machines in the polls. But, the BJP did not oblige.

BJP former president B. Dattatreya said the TRS had indeed made such a suggestion and his party had even decided to see that 70 to 75 candidates filed nominations. However, the Central leadership was averse to the whole idea because the party was not totally against EVMs.

On the other hand, the TRS was of the view that it would have asked its cadre to file nominations en masse in Nizamabad (Urban) if the BJP had expressed its inability. (మరింత…)

Telangana polls: Hundreds of candidates, intentions suspect
T S Sudhir, NDTV, July 09, 2010

Hyderabad: Later this month, Telangana will vote for 12 new MLAs. These are vacancies created by politicians who resigned in protest over what they describe as the lack of support from the Centre and the state government for a separate Telangana state.

There’s no shortage of candidates. The Warangal (West) constituency alone has 117 candidates. All but one are independent candidates. It’s not just a desire to serve the people that’s at play. Sources say parties want to ensure that Electronic Voting Machines (EVM), famous for being tamper-proof, cannot be used. An EVM can deal with a maximum of 64 nominations. Hence, the surging numbers. Move to affiliate Medak colleges with TU stalled

Srinath Vudali
New Indian Express, 30 Jun 2010

HYDERABAD: The state government’s move to affiliate all professional colleges in Medak district to Telangana University (TU) in Nizamabad district was strongly opposed by Cabinet ministers – Geeta Reddy and Sunitha Lakshma Reddy – besides TRS senior leader T Harish Rao who hails from the district.

The result: Decision withdrawn! In March, the department of Higher Education has decided to affiliate all the private, aided, unaided and government colleges in Adilabad, Medak and Nizamabad districts to TU.

A similar decision was taken with respect to all the new universities, which were started three year ago during the regime of former chief minister late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

Sources in Telangana University said all the public representatives of the district including the ministers, legislators and leaders of all the political parties lobbied with Chief Minister K Rosaiah. The Chief Minister who came under severe pressure ordered for scrapping of the order immediately. (మరింత…)

Bypoll acid test for first timers
Special Correspondent, The Hindu, June 22, 2010

Six to test electoral fortunes for the second time in 14 months

HYDERABAD: Next month’s elections to 10 Assembly constituencies in Telangana will be an acid test for the political careers of at least six candidates – five from the Telangana Rashtra Samiti and one from the Bharatiya Janata Party – who resigned from the Assembly in support for separate Telangana.

These six will be testing their electoral fortunes for the second time within 14 months of their maiden entry into the Assembly whereas the remaining four MLAs who resigned Etala Rajender, T. Harish Rao, E. Ravinder Reddy and K. Eshwar are veterans of earlier battles.
Kaveti Sammaiah (Sirpur), N. Odelu (Chennur), G. Aravind Reddy (Mancherial), K. Vidyasagar Rao (Korutla) and D. Vinay Bhaskar (Warangal West) are all from the TRS, while E. Lakshminarayana (Nizamabad Urban) of BJP emerged as giant killer by trouncing PCC president D. Srinivas with a comfortable margin of 11,015 votes.

Two other ex-MLAs who were elected for the first time — Chennmaneni Ramesh of TDP (Vemulwada) and KCR’s son, K. T. Rama Rao (Sircilla) — will have to wait for some more time as the EC has decided against holding byelections to these two constituencies now as election petitions against them are pending in the High Court.

TRS may lend tacit support to PCC chief
Express News Service, 8 Jun 2010

HYDERABAD: The ensuing by elections in Telangana might well be a precursor to future developments in the Congress, apart from testing the strength of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).

According to informed sources, behind-the scenes moves have begun to facilitate a victory for PCC president D Srinivas from Nizamabad Assembly constituency in the byelection, expected during July-August.

Interestingly, the party that is not averse to favouring Srinivas is the TRS whose 10 MLAs quit the Assembly demanding statehood for the region. (మరింత…)
