Remembering Guda Anjanna – The signature song of Telangana’s Dalit Revolution
Karthik Navayan, June 23, 2016 Round Table India

The first time I heard about Guda Anjanna (1 November 1955 – 21 June 2016), through my classmate and Anjanna’s nephew (brother’s son) Guda Rajendar, in 1989, when I was studying in 8th class. Anjanna belongs to Lingapur village of Dandepally Mandal in Adilabad District. At the time, I was studying in the Dandepally social welfare hostel, and Anjanna’s nephew Guda Rajendar was my classmate. Anjanna had two more well-educated brothers I knew at the time. Anjanna’s elder brother, Dr Guda Chandraiah (MBBS), was a Dalit leader and activist too. Later, after I left hostel, I heard that Dr Chandraiah died at an young age. Guda Shanthaiah, Guda Anjanna’s younger brother was also a poet and songwriter; he too died at a very young age. I saw all of the three brothers of Guda family in my student life. They were all inspiring people.

AP Government Rules Out Return of Merged Villages to TS

Express News Service, 18 February 2016

ELURU/ HYDERABAD: A day after Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s statement that the Andhra Pradesh government had agreed to his proposal to give some of the villages that were earlier merged with the reorganised State back to TS, the AP government on Wednesday made it clear that it had not accepted any such proposal.

“We have no idea about such proposal. In fact, all these villages were merged with AP from the TS so as to clear the way for the construction of Polavaram project. If some of these villages are given back to TS, how could the project be taken up?” a top official wondered. (మరింత…)

“No settler here, even I’m from outside”

KTR says strong passions are passé and the government has to take everyone along

Panchayat Raj Minister K.T. Rama Rao made it clear that the city’s population does not lend itself for clustering into “settlers” and “non-settlers”, as most residents here are migrants from other places.

“Even I am not from here. I migrated from Siddipet. In fact, even America is a country of immigrants,” he said, at the ‘Meet the Press’ event organised by the Telangana State Union of Working Journalists here on Tuesday.

“It is true that we had given slogans like ‘Jaago, Bhaago’, and we are not apologetic about it now. Such were the passions then, when leaders from Andhra tried to hinder Telangana State. Today the passions are not there. We have to take everyone along. This is the government, even for those who didn’t vote for us,” Mr. Rao elaborated, responding to a statement that local people are angry with government’s efforts to please “settlers”. (మరింత…)

Telangana: Poor women tricked into slavery in Gulf

Jan 13, 2016 | Age Correspondent | Hyderabad

Agents take money from employers promising cheap labour.

Hyderabad: When his wife called him from Saudi Arabia three days after landing there and started crying, Ali bin Yusuf Barkath thought she must be homesick.

The 40-year-old Parveen, who went to work as a maid in a Saudi national’s house, told Yusuf “It’s terrible. I cannot stay here anymore.”

After eight days when Yusuf talked to her, things were worse. “She told me that she was made to work from morning to midnight. They did not give her food on some days. She could not speak properly fearing her employer would snatch her phone,” said Yusuf, an autorickshaw driver.

The next conversation with Parveen shocked Yusuf. He became convinced that she was being pushed into bonded labour.

“When she protested, her employer told her that he bought her paying money to the visa agent. He told her that she cannot leave for two years as per the deal with the agent,” said Yusuf. (మరింత…)

All parties, without exception, are scrambling for votes of ‘settlers’, particularly of Andhra Pradesh origin, in the elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, as they constitute a sizeable population and have the potential to swing the results.

The ruling TRS has tried to impress on the section that the dividing line between people of AP and Telangana origin had withered away after the general elections in 2014 when they voted overwhelmingly in favour of Telugu Desam Party and the BJP. The Opposition, however, reminded them that the scars from wounds of bifurcation were still visible. This was clearly visible from the tweet of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s son Lokesh in the hash tag ‘#HyderabadBarbaad’, wherein he said “two faced TRS proves it again. One that cries foul at settlers for votes, another that sympathises them, again for votes.”

The Commercial Taxes Minister T. Srinivas Yadav displayed the goodies of TRS for settlers at a press conference here on Sunday, when he said he would be visiting Bheemavaram and other places in East and West Godavari districts to participate in Sankranti celebrations. Mr. Yadav had been going there for several years to take part in cockfights during the festival, but this time, he said, it was only to celebrate. (మరింత…)

Telangana University opens e-resource centre for TSPSC exams

P Ram Mohan, The Hindu, Nizamabad, January 10, 2016

V-C has given green signal to purchase any number of books required by students, says Registrar

Dozens of coaching centres have emerged across the district with a series of notifications coming for recruitment of various jobs in the State government. Aspirants of jobs are thronging coaching centres and libraries for serious preparation.

They, however, seem to be struggling to find relevant syllabus in books and magazine available at the libraries. They find it difficult to get authentic information on Telangana politics, economics, culture and festivals, geography, general history, and history of the 60-year-old agitation for separate Statehood and also on current affairs.

The market is flooded with books written by several writers, but aspirants do not feel satisfied with the contents in them. They have been waiting for the books written by eminent writers being published by the Telugu Academy. Meanwhile, coaching centres are searching for senior faculty members and experts in general studies to engage them in their centres. (మరింత…)

AP, TS to share Rs. 8,000 cr. of inherited debt

M L Melly Maitreyi, The Hindu, December 1, 2015

Sources said the remaining debt of Rs.10,000 crore raised by the united State under externally aided projects would also be distributed soon between the two successor States.

Some of these loans were raised to fund projects like Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road, Hussain Sagar clean-up and the Krishnapatnam power project.

While there is no dispute that such debts will be assigned to the State in which the particular project is located, other borrowings are rather more ticklish, such as those for development, welfare, irrigation, roads, rural water supply and poverty alleviation.

These would have to be apportioned on the basis of the population ratio. (మరింత…)

What drives farmers to suicide? Telangana govt says lavish weddings, expensive education

ABP Live, Our special correspondents and agencies, Sunday, 29 November 2015

Hyderabad: Telangana has told Hyderabad High Court that expenses farmers run up to hold lavish weddings for their daughters and educate their children in expensive private schools were among the many reasons that drove them to suicide.

The state’s claim, which has triggered outrage among activists, came in an affidavit filed in response to petitions by farmers’ groups seeking a direction to the state to take steps to end such suicides.

The activists have termed the government response “fictional” and “irresponsible”. They claimed that attributing such reasons for the deaths of financially distressed farmers “belittled the contribution and sacrifices” of the farming community in general.

They said such a response was “ridiculous” and “misleading” given that over 231 of 443 rural mandals in Telangana had been declared drought-hit and the state had itself sought immediate aid of Rs 1,000 crore from the Centre. Mahbubnagar, Medak, Nizamabad and Rangareddy are among the worst affected districts. (మరింత…)
