TRS wants CBI to probe dam deal
December 6, 2011 Deccan Chronicle, Hyderabad
The TRS on Monday demanded that the government order a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities in awarding the Polavaram contract. The TRS was earlier pushed to a corner by the Leader of Opposition, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, who accused the TRS chief Mr K. Chandrasekhar Rao of mortgaging the Telangana agitation for the Polavaram contract, during the debate on the no-confidence motion. The construction company SEW, which owns considerable stake in a pro-Telangana newspaper in which Mr Chandrasekhar Rao is a partner, was preferred by the state government in Polavaram contract despite certain inadequacies.
The TRS floor leader, Mr E. Rajender, said his party demanded not just the cancellation of the tenders but scrapping of the project itself. He reminded the House that it was Mr Chandrasekhar Rao who mobilized the Telangana people against Polavaram dam which will drown 370 T-villages in Khammam district. Mr Rajender said his party was pained at the House not debating the aspirations of four crore people of Telangana and suicides by hundreds of students and farmers in Telangana. He also demanded that the state implement the Prof. Swaminathan Committee recommendations that farmers in T be paid `500 more than the MSP paid to coastal farmers.
