Stunned Desam looks for answer
Deccan Chronicle, August 1, 2010
July 31: The by-poll results have forced the Telugu Desam (TD) into a soul searching mood. It is trying to find reasons for its poor show in the polls. The party chief, Mr Chandrababu Naidu, on Saturday held a meeting with leaders from the Telangana region and asked for a detailed feedback on the causes for the party’s debacle. All the 12 Assembly seats that went for polls were once considered TD strongholds, they now look deserted going by the percentage of votes polled by the party nominees.
At one stage Mr Naidu was stunned and asked the party leaders, “when there are 7,500 active members enrolled in party in Nizamabad town, how the party nominee got only 1,793 votes.” Similarly, in Warangal West Assembly segment, in Division No 38, which is held by the party corporator, Mr Dasaradharama Rao, only one vote was polled in favour of the TD candidate, Mr V. Narender Reddy.
“Even assuming he and his family members have four votes, if only one vote was polled means there seems to be something wrong,” Mr Naidu observed. Even in Vemulawada, the segment previously held by TD, the party candidate in the by-polls polled just 4,387 votes and whereas an independent candidate from Nalgonda, who had filed the nomination but did not canvass, surprisingly polled over 8,000 votes.
It is learnt party leaders told Mr Naidu that mere promises by the candidates on Telangana commitment did not work and the cadre felt that the party chief himself should have reiterated the commitment towards Telangana cause and personally concentrated on the campaign.
The leaders also brought to his notice about the TRS chief, Mr K. Chandrasekhara Rao’s statements saying he would see that Telugu Desam was marginalised by next elections. They have also conveyed him that TRS and Congress would somehow continue their efforts to marginalise the TD, it is a big threat for the party, another leader told him.
Meanwhile, the Telugu Desam rout was complete in the by-polls. The counting for four of the five Assembly segments that went to polls with ballot paper was completed in the early hours of Saturday and TD failed to get deposits in these segments too. The Assembly segments are, Yellareddy, Korutla, Sircilla and Huzurabad.
