‘Terms of reference not in favour of separate Telangana’

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti has announced its intention to boycott the proceedings of Justice B.N. Srikrishna Committee as the Terms of Reference (ToR) of the committee were not in favour of separate Telangana State.

“We will not meet the committee members as its terms of reference are not in line with the December 9 announcement by Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram,” TRS floor leader E. Rajender said. The ToR reflected yet again the Centre’s intentions to “deceive” the people of Telangana who would not compromise on anything short of a separate State.

The TRS MLAs who announced intentions to quit from their membership of the legislature, however, put on hold the decision for a day to avoid giving scope for criticism that the party had acted unilaterally. Amid apprehensions over the support they would get from the Congress and the Telugu Desam, the TRS MLAs deferred their move to resign on being ‘counselled’ by Telangana Joint Action Committee convenor M. Kodandaram against giving scope for other parties to “escape” by their actions. Sources said the JAC constituents, the TDP in particular, had apprehensions over whether the Congress MLAs would prefer putting in their papers. “There is no point in quitting the posts unless there is an affirmative action from the Congress,” a TDP senior MLA said. The party had, therefore, decided to wait for the Congress’ moves before embarking upon its own course.

At a meeting, several TDP leaders were understood to have opined that their plans for precipitating a constitutional crisis through resignations enmasse would go awry if the Congress, which has maximum number of MLAs from the region, distances itself. “Resignations by other parties may at best entail a by-election in five to six months,” a TDP MLA said.

Meanwhile, the TRS politbureau endorsed the decision to resign on Sunday irrespective of the outcome of the JAC’s meeting. The politbureau was unanimous in claiming that the Congress had betrayed the region succumbing to the influence made by the Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema lobby.
