Telangana: JAC deadline ends today
The Hindu, Jan 28, 2010

TRS, TDP, BJP MLAs to press acceptance of resignations; Congress not to quit

HYDERABAD: Major political parties in Telangana region are nervously looking at the Centre to break the deadlock as the ultimatum set by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) for announcement of a time-bound programme on Telangana ends on Jan. 28.

TRS, TDP and BJP MLAs are determined to press acceptance of their resignations on Friday and stage a dharna in the Speaker’s chamber if they are not accepted. The Congress legislators are in no mood to precipitate a crisis by quitting their membership, while the TDP has placed on the JAC the onus of forcing Congressmen to resign.

JAC convenor C. Kodandaram and TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao announced after an emergency meeting of the committee late in the night that there was no change in the call jointly given by the parties to MLAs to resign by Thursday. They said they will await a favourable announcement by the Centre on Thursday failing which all the MLAs will proceed to the Assembly from the JAC office on Friday. Meanwhile, a meeting of the 26-member steering committee of JAC has been convened on Thursday to draw up a fresh strategy. Mr. Rao said the meeting will be attended by Congress members who were absent on Wednesday.

Two senior Congress leaders K. Jana Reddy and R. Damodar Reddy rushed to New Delhi less than 24 hours after they returned here. Initially, it was believed that the Central leadership had summoned them, but it clearly turned out later that there was no invite from New Delhi.

The two leaders first met CWC member K. Keshava Rao and later called on Union Minister S. Jaipal Reddy with whom they were closeted for over an hour.

They resolved to request the Congress high command to make some statement about the constitution of a judicial committee, a proposal in the air for the past several days, to bail them out of their piquant situation. In the absence of any forward movement, they feared that they would be unable to visit their constituencies.

They deputed Convenor of AP Congress MPs Forum Ponnam Prabhakar and MLC P. Sudhakar Reddy to meet AICC general secretary M. Veerappa Moily and request him to prevail upon Home Minister P. Chidambaram to expedite the process of statehood. All of them sought appointments with Political Secretary to AICC president Mr. Ahmed Patel and CWC member Oscar Fernandes.
