Time Now, 8 Dec 2009, 1141 hrs IST

Echoing the Telangana Rashtra Samithi’s (TRS) demand for a separate state, members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday (December 8) protested outside the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, which was adjourned following the chaos that erupted after the Speaker disallowed an adjournment motion moved by the TRS MLAs.

BJP workers staged a dharna outside the Assembly, joining a TRS mob at the Osmania University in Hyderabad. Adding pressure on the Congress, members of the BJP raised pro-Telangana protests, even as the Speaker adjourned the Assembly till Wednesday (December 9).

Senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu accused the Congress of delaying the Telangana issue. Naidu demands to know that if the Andhra Congress is in favour, then who is opposing the issue. Speaking to a bunch of reporters Naidu said, “The state unit of Congress party is in favour of Telangana and so is TRS and Praja Rajyam. Then who is opposing it? The situation in Andhra Pradesh is very serious. Students and lawyers are protesting, what else do we need?”

Andhra Pradesh Congress chief too said that the party is favour of Telangana, but added that party president Sonia Gandhi will take the final call on the decision. D Srinivas, Andhra Pradesh PCC Chief said, “Congress is in favor of Telangana but its upto the high command. Chief Minister K Rosaiah called an all party meet and sent a resolution to MHA, now centre will intervene and decide.”

TRS ups ante

Meanwhile, pro-statehood students along with TRS supporters gathered outside the Osmania University campus and continued protests, even as the police remain on stand-by. About 1,000 students, raised slogans in support of a separate Telangana state. On Monday (December 7), students hurled stones at the police on being prevented from proceeding to the university campus.

TRS MLA Harish Rao said that the party will continue to agitate till the government passes the resolution for a separate Telangana state. Speaking to a bunch of reporters Rao said, “TRS will not stop agitating. We will step up the agitation on December 10 th , where students and youth of Telangana will gather in Hyderabad and continue agitation. Everyone wants a separate state, including the Congress leaders in the Telangana legislature. We have been demanding for a separate state since 5 decades now and the government must pass the resolution now. If they don’t violence will continue to take place in the state.”

Police has been facing stiff resistance from TRS supporters in different parts of the state. The police has been deployed in large numbers and are being used to disperse the agitators.
