Rosaiah critical of KCR’s strategy
Special Correspondent, The Hindu December 3, 2009
NEW DELHI: Chief Minister K. Rosaiah criticised Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) president K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s strategy of going on a fast-unto-death for achieving separate Telangana which ultimately led to his arrest and subsequent violence and damage to public and private property.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had asked him to handle the issue carefully, the Chief Minister told journalists here after meeting the former on Wednesday.
The TRS could have adopted a non-violent way to press its demands instead of resorting to violence, he said, adding that the government was duty-bound to protect the life of Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao as he wanted to go on a fast-unto-death and that was why he was taken into custody.
The Congress high command, particularly party president Sonia Gandhi, was seized of the matter and the Centre was trying to evolve a consensus among all the parties at the national level to decide on the Telangana issue and things would take time for a decision.
“Whatever be the decision taken by Ms. Gandhi we are agreeable to that,” he said. He compared the issue with the Women’s Reservation Bill which was still pending in Parliament for years.
To a question, Mr. Rosaiah said except for some sporadic incidents the law and order in view of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti stir was under control in AP and everything was in order in Hyderabad.
He made it clear that the State government had no role to play on the formation of a separate State.
He said a ministerial team had been asked to visit Mr. Rao to convince him to withdraw the fast.
