Adilabad, July 26: Adilabad girls are reaching for the sky these days. Ms Mamidoju Chaithanya of the district, who is aiming to be an astronaut, has been invited to take part in the swearing-in of the US President on January 19, 2009. She will also participate in Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference to be held in the White House from January 17 to 21.
Already, Ms G. Swathy of Adilabad has done her district proud by becoming a commercial pilot in the US. Ms Chaithanya, a native of Nirmal town, was selected because of her outstanding contribution in the field of space technology. Her active participation in the Global Young Leaders’ conference held in Washington DC from July 6 to 17 also gained her attention.
Ms Chaithanya had earned kudos by presenting a project on rockets in the 58th International Astronomical Congress held in September 2007 in Hyderabad. Her work would help space vehicles carry more fuel and enable missions of longer duration.
The former President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the NASA chief, Mr Zimmerman and Indian origin astronaut, Ms Sunita Williams, who attended the congress, were impressed with her project. Soon after, she got the invitation to attend the Global Young Leaders’ Conference. In all, nine young people from India attended the conference.
She confesses to be inspired by Sunita Williams and is going to do her B.Tech in Dindigal Aeronautical Engineering College in Hyderabad. “I have been increasing my knowledge of space technology in the last four years,” she said.
