వైవిద్య రాగాల వీణ – తెలంగాణ : Cover story of Sunday ‘Vaartha’ (16 September 2007)  is an example of plagiarism, sadly that is widespread in Telugu writing.  It is a good story. But not done in right way.

The cover story of eight pages (page 12 to 19) is a picturesque tale with photos taken from ‘Spirit of Telangana 2007’ Calendar and TUC website. ‘Vaartha’ cover story has all its pictures – eight pictures on the cover from Utsav.

And eight page story has fifteen more pictures depicting culture and monuments of varied districts of Telangana.

23 pictures altogether are taken from the Utsav website and the photo credits were neatly deleted from these pictures and used in the story. All these are works of several artists both professional and amateur

NO MENTION WAS MADE OF THE SOURCE OF THESE 23 PICTURES THAT MADE THE ‘VAARTHA’ STORY!

Several friends who have seen the calendar earlier felt bad at the collective work of Utsav team being ‘grabbed’ and displaced by the ‘Vaartha’ story. Photographers asked whether we gave consent for the publication of their pictures in the weekly. The calendar is a product of several individuals both in Utsav in Hyderabad and districts as well as several friends from abroad who were part of designing the product. Friends from NRI Telangana groups alongwith a large number of volunteers here were part of selecting the themes, pictures and research inputs and data that went into the calendar

Yesterday I spoke to the editor of Sunday ‘Vaartha’ Sri Gudipati on mobile (98487-87284) about their use of these pictures without a word of information and acknowledgement. Told him that we are shocked at the way Vaartha used works of others and told him that many photographers and friends were disappointed at ‘Vaartha’ behaving in such manner.

He was polite but the content of his talk was further disappointing. “ఆది ఇంటర్నెట్లోంచి తీసుకొన్నారనుకొన్నా ! ” (Oh ! I didn’t know it was from the Utsav Calendar, I thought it was from internet!)

Can material on internet be used and claimed by anybody as their own?
These kinds of views and practices are shocking and reflect lack of ethics in writing field.

He promised to publish acknowledgements and source of the pictures in the Sunday issue of 30 September!

Similar shocking act happened recently with Varavara Rao’s bathukamma song and audio taken from ‘Discovery Telangana’ by ‘Prajakala‘ without any acknowledgement. ‘Discovery Telangana’ objected to the way ‘Prajakala‘ behaved. Subsequently it acknowledged the source but pretended ignorance of how it happened. Not a single word of apology for its practice

I wonder when the responsible people- journalists, academicians, intellectuals and activist writers- will also respect basic ethics of writing to admit and acknowledge the source.

‘Grabbing’ writings and works whether they are in print form or on internet are condemnable acts! And ‘Vaartha’’s act is undesirable.

We expect all concerned would help build a responsible way of writing

It’s time we raise our voice & condemn the acts of ‘Main Stream Media’. Telangana has been exploited in all ways possible, now Vaartha has went a step ahead with their sunday edition.

Let’s all SMS,
“Enough of Plagiarism towards Telangana Journalists” ;
“Credit the Telangana photographers, Journalists” ;
“Stop Plagiarism” ;
“Jai Telangana”
to ‘Vaartha’ editor Mr. Gudipatis mobile (98487-87284)

I agree.

It is not acceptable to take the work of an artist or a writer/poet and use it in any manner without consent. Asking Vaartha editor to acknowledge it (along with any remuneration that is a normal part of such usage) would be the best thing to do. Artists and writers need to support themselves too, with their creativity. It helps to nurture the talent that way.

I would expect Vaartha guys to pay & acknowledge.

Also, please indicate a copyright notice on all these websites — so that they can be credited correctly, atleast upon bringing it to the notice of fellow webmasters/owners.

Vaartha was once neck-to-neck with Eenadu in terms of popularity.
But, they are slowly loosing ground as their internet edition also flopped.

We can take this matter to Mr. Tankashala Ashok, Mr. Damarla Saibaba or even to the Sanghi’s.

“HOPE THE MISCHEIVIOUS REPORTER WILL ADMIT THE MISTAKE & APOLOGISE BEFORE WE SPREAD THIS TO ENTIRE WORLD”

7. Jaya Prakash - సెప్టెంబర్ 18, 2007

Dear Chaduvari garu & Friends,
If you look at http://discover-telangana.org or my blog; you’ll find articles directly archived from different news magazines, but there you’ll see at the end that the source has been mentioned & linked to the proper page (if a permanent page exists). This is to respect the Journalistic ethics & source.

I hope as netizens / bloggers we’ll protect this respect unlike these ‘Main Stream Media’

Once again, ! Thanks for the support to build a better interNET !

How about going to court?

11. T. L. Bala Subrahmanyam - సెప్టెంబర్ 19, 2007

ఎంతమంది మీద వెళ్ళగలం న్యాయస్థానానికి ?

12. K.yadagiri - సెప్టెంబర్ 22, 2007

Going to court is not a clever idea. First of all, we are all Telangana People, who are working for the same cause, whereever we are. And the Main thing is Vartha Cover Story is promoting the Teleangala Culture, and with asprirations of the region. And another one is we were focussed by a Main Stream Media. It is appreciable, and I think Vartha always feel concern about Telanga issues.

13. Jaya Prakash - సెప్టెంబర్ 23, 2007

Going to court is something TUC has to make a decission on.

Bala Subrahmanyam garu,
Not many people who blog believe in Copyrights, (atlease i don’t) also there is nothing wrong that Vaartha has used the photos and it doesn’t mean that you have the authority to publish as if you own them. As the post mentions its a collective effort made by many reknown photographers, it’s a debate on ethics and not to check whether “ఎవడబ్బ సొత్తూ కాదని” ?

Seems like this is ‘Vaartha’ editor Mr. Gudipatis email ID gudipati24[at]gmail[dot]com if anyone wants to write to him too !

14. mbbhushan - సెప్టెంబర్ 24, 2007

Dear All

Its not a question of enforcing best practices by force of law. We do not expect ethics followed by strictures from courts. More laws will not make stealing less or lesser

Lasting and real respect for knowledge enterprise and art must come from value for something that is good. And the effort that is

Utsav Committee thanks all for advocating the simple norm among writing community- ‘give due credits to the source of anything quoted or reproduced’
