TRS gains strengthen Telengana movement
Of the 12 seats for which polls were held, TRS retained seven and was leading in four other constituencies
C.R. Sukumar, livemint.com, Jul 30 2010
Hyderabad: Both the ruling Congress and main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh were set to lose to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in by-elections to 12 assembly seats in the Telangana region.
Giving strength to the movement for carving a separate Telangana state out of Andhra Pradesh, TRS has won seven of the 12 seats and was leading in four more constituencies, according to poll data available on Friday evening. It is set to improve its tally in the region by one seat over the April 2009 polls.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured one seat.
Results were declared by the afternoon in seven constituencies where electronic voting machines had been used. Paper ballots were being counted in the other constituencies, of which the results for one were declared late evening.
The 12 seats had been vacated by lawmakers to press their demand for a separate state. All have won or are leading in their respective seats, including Ch. Ramesh of TRS, who had contested as a TDP member in the previous election. Except for the loss to TDP, there is no change in the strength of the political parties in the state assembly.
Political analysts describe the results as a vote for TRS’ Telangana movement but not as a major loss to the Congress or the TDP. “The ground-level situation is entirely different in the Telangana region, where more than 90% of panchayats are in the hands of (the) Congress and TDP and they may regain their lost ground quite quickly,” said C. Narasimha Rao, an independent political analyst.
“For the time being, TRS was successful in making the voters treat the bypolls as (a) referendum for a separate Telangana state by re-electing the candidates,” he added. (more…)

Telangana bypolls: EVMs may be used in 7 constituencies
Special Correspondent , The Hindu, Jul 11, 2010
HYDERABAD: The option of deploying electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the ensuing Assembly byelections in the Telangana region became available to the Election Commission following the rejection of as many as 213 nomination papers of independents during scrutiny on Saturday.
As a result, the number of nominations in six out of the 12 constituencies fell below 64, the maximum number that can be handled by the EVMs. The scrutiny was conducted by central observers deputed by the Election Commission after the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) asked hundreds of its partymen to file nominations as a ploy to pre-empt the use of EVMs, which, it feels, can be tampered with. This had swelled the number of candidates to 926.
The number of nominations in Nizamabad (Urban) constituency was below 64 even before this exercise was undertaken. Consequently, EVMs are likely to be used in Nizamabad (14 nominations), Sirpur (55), Chennur-SC (60), Mancherial (49), Dharmapuri-SC (61), Vemulawada (42) and Siddipet (45). (more…)

EVMs: BJP ‘lets down’ TRS
Special Correspondent, The Hindu, Jul 11, 2010
- Did not go for mass filing of nomination papers
- BJP Central leadership not totally against EVMs
- KCR’s daughter to campaign in Nizamabad on July 12 and 13
HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) had suggested to the BJP with which the former has seat sharing arrangement in the coming by-elections to ensure mass filing of nominations but obviously its efforts failed.
TRS leaders insisted that they had asked the BJP to follow suit in Nizamabad (Urban) constituency as in the remaining eleven segments where activists of the former filed nominations in large numbers to compel the Election Commission to introduce electronic voting machines in the polls. But, the BJP did not oblige.
BJP former president B. Dattatreya said the TRS had indeed made such a suggestion and his party had even decided to see that 70 to 75 candidates filed nominations. However, the Central leadership was averse to the whole idea because the party was not totally against EVMs.
On the other hand, the TRS was of the view that it would have asked its cadre to file nominations en masse in Nizamabad (Urban) if the BJP had expressed its inability. (more…)

Cong mulling a Reddy CM to stop Jaganaut?
TNN, Jul 9, 2010
HYDERABAD: The Congress high command, caught between a mild-mannered chief minister K Rosaiah and an aggressive Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, is believed to be working on a grand design to stave off the looming menace to its authority. Central to this plan is the induction of a Reddy chief minister if the Jagan threat continues.
With the Congress in the state being perceived as a Reddy dominated party, the thinking is that a Reddy alone can act as a counter balance to the growing clout of Jagan. “Reddys by and large are with the party. This is the only group which is numerically strong, cohesive and the party can bank on it for support, financial or otherwise. At present, Reddys alone can lead the party to victory,” said a senior party leader. (more…)

“Statehood must for Telangana’s development”
Staff Reporter, The Hindu
HYDERABAD: “People of Telangana will get their due right on the land and water resources only if the region is separated as a State” is what a delegation of Arya Pratinidhi Sabha argued before Srikrishna Committee here on Monday.
The cultural identity and self-respect of the people here was also being overshadowed by other regions’ cultural and economic onslaught, Vithal Rao Arya, Narayan Rao Pawar and others stated in their representation to the committee. Asked what a religious organisation had got to do with Telangana issue, the Arya Samaj members told the panel that taking up social issues was not new to them. Founded in 1875, the body had fought for the country’s freedom first and against the Nizam later. It had been supporting the cause of Telangana for long, they explained. (more…)

Telangana polls: Hundreds of candidates, intentions suspect
T S Sudhir, NDTV, July 09, 2010
Hyderabad: Later this month, Telangana will vote for 12 new MLAs. These are vacancies created by politicians who resigned in protest over what they describe as the lack of support from the Centre and the state government for a separate Telangana state.
There’s no shortage of candidates. The Warangal (West) constituency alone has 117 candidates. All but one are independent candidates. It’s not just a desire to serve the people that’s at play. Sources say parties want to ensure that Electronic Voting Machines (EVM), famous for being tamper-proof, cannot be used. An EVM can deal with a maximum of 64 nominations. Hence, the surging numbers.
