New party may boost Telangana demand

The demand for a separate Telangana state could gain momentum with T Devender Goud, who resigned from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Monday, preparing to launch his own party. Goud’s resignation has triggered a chain of events indicating a realignment of forces in Telangana region in the coming months. More leaders from other parties are likely to join the bandwagon.

A mass leader with strong organisational skills, Goud is becoming the rallying point for all the votaries of Telangana, including those who supported the Telangana Rastra Samiti (TRS).

Goud’s telephone has not stopped ringing since Monday morning with leaders and cadres of many parties across Telangana calling him to either congratulate or evince interest in his new venture. The first casualty could be the already-badly-mauled TRS. The sub-regional party could see a mass exodus to Goud’s new party.

Apparently keeping that in mind, TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao invited Goud to join TRS, which the latter promptly rejected. Goud nurses ambitions of becoming the first Chief Minister and is not likely to play second fiddle to anyone.

He has already crossed the first hurdle by bagging the support of intellectuals from Telangana, who helped TRS gain legitimacy. The Telangana Development Forum, a powerful lobby of NRIs from Telangana, is also said to be reviewing its stand vis-à-vis TRS. (ఇంకా…)

No political alliance with TRS: Goud

Rediff.com June 24, 2008

T Devender Goud, who quit the Telugu Desam party over the Telangana issue, has made it clear that his future political plans do not include any tie up with the Telangana Rahstra Samiti of K Chandrasekhara Rao or any other political party.

Goud, the former No 2 of the TDP, told mailpersons that he has convened a meeting of the intellectuals and the elders, who have been associated with the Telangana movement, on June 28.

“In the light of their guidance and advice, we will finalise our future political plans and strategies,” Goud said. When asked whether he would launch a new political party, Goud remained non-committal, but indicated that the formation of a new regional party was on the cards.

Goud made it clear that no political leader will be invited to the meeting. “We want to consult the elders and intellectuals, who played a major role in the Telangana movement in the past, on how to take the movement forward,” he said. (ఇంకా…)

Bathukamma: Will we see more of Telangana cinema?

-K Naresh Kumar

Bathukamma – the film created on the platform of a popular ladies’ festival in Telangana is actually a red herring. Using the popular religious sentiment and generously soaking up the songs and customs associated with the event, Bathukamma actually talks about the burning issue of statehood, quest for its independence and its hoary past of victimization. This 15-reeler is a lone arrow that has been shot into the dark jungle infested with a set of its formidable foes united in their purpose to thwart any threat to their hegemony.

Unless the arrow is shot from an archer of Arjuna’s versatility, it is bound to be countered easily by the rival groups. Nevertheless, it is a sensational beginning where a Telugu film speaks a different dialect. Not surprising, it appeals to a region comprising over three- crore population. If one may say so, this effort is like a Bhojpuri film launched along its better-known, lavishly mounted big brother variety – the Hindi films- and giving a tough fight at the box-office. Are we seeing a new beginning?

It is indeed surprising how this single act, laden with a focus and purpose of achieving one’s objective can transmit an eye-catching, soul capturing appeal. This small film Bathukamma (small only with reference to its budget and star cast) was released in a single screen in one of the oldest surviving single-screen theatres – Venkatesa. It has kept on going, capitalizing on its superb timing of release on May 1 (nearly a month before the by elections) and as I write this, is well on to its ninth week charging up a modest audience watching it.

What is its appeal? (ఇంకా…)
